Prêté une épaule rebelle : qui repousse le fardeau dont on veut la charger. Suit l'indication d'un nouveau degré d'endurcissement : après avoir refusé d'obéir, appesantir ses oreilles pour ne plus entendre la voix du maître ; le dernier degré enfin : lorsque cette voix est parvenue à la conscience bon gré mal gré, rendre son cœur insensible comme le diamant, la plus dure des pierres (Ezéchiel 8.9).

Par son Esprit. Les Israélites étaient d'autant plus coupables que l'Esprit de Dieu accompagnait la parole des prophètes, cherchant à la rendre efficace. Michée 3.8 ; Esaïe 63.10.
