L'auteur revient, après les remarques incidentes versets 19 à 24, à la description des fonctions des portiers, telles qu'elles ont subsisté dès le temps de David et telles qu'elles existaient également au temps du retour de l'exil, qu'il a spécialement en vue. On peut se demander à quelle époque se rapporte le chiffre de 212, au temps de David ou au temps du retour de l'exil ? Malgré la fin du verset le plus simple est de penser à cette dernière époque, quoique Néhémie 11.19 ne parle que de 172 hommes et Esdras 2.42 de 139. Au temps de David, d'après 1Chroniques 26.8-11, le nombre des portiers n'était que de 93. Il peut y avoir quelque part une corruption du texte (soit dans Néhémie 11.19, soit, ici, soit aussi Esdras 2.42), ou bien peut-être y a-t-il une manière différente de compter à la base de ces différentes données.

En tout cas les 512 portiers n'habitaient pas tous à Jérusalem, comme le montrent la suite du verset 22 et le verset 25, mais dans les endroits avoisinants où ils étaient enregistrés. Comparez pour les chantres Néhémie 12.29 et l'opposition établie (Néhémie chapitre 11) entre ceux qui habitaient à Jérusalem et ceux qui habitaient ailleurs (comparez versets 3, 4, 19, 20, 21, 36). A Jérusalem n'habitaient sans doute que les chefs principaux des portiers ; les autres venaient, à tour de rôle, des villages accomplir leur temps de service (verset 25).

La fin du verset 22 précise le début du 19 en rappelant l'origine davidique de l'institution des portiers. Avec David l'auteur mentionne Samuel, quoique Samuel soit mort avant que David eût procédé à l'organisation du culte lévitique. Il veut sans doute rappeler par là l'influence que Samuel a exercée sur David et sur la restauration d'Israël après l'époque troublée des Juges. En fait, Samuel n'a pas travaillé avec David, mais l'œuvre de David n'est que la continuation de celle de Samuel.

      29 for the show bread also, and for the fine flour for a meal offering, whether of unleavened wafers, or of that which is baked in the pan, or of that which is soaked, and for all kinds of measure and size;
      30 and to stand every morning to thank and praise Yahweh, and likewise in the evening;
      31 and to offer all burnt offerings to Yahweh, on the Sabbaths, on the new moons, and on the set feasts, in number according to the ordinance concerning them, continually before Yahweh;
      32 and that they should keep the duty of the Tent of Meeting, and the duty of the holy place, and the duty of the sons of Aaron their brothers, for the service of the house of Yahweh.
