Grec : "Mais je vous exhorte..." Malgré le beau témoignage que je viens de vous donner, ou plutôt à cause de ce témoignage même, en considération de tant de dons de la grâce, voici ma première pensée, mon instante exhortation : Soyez unis ! Et ce sujet important, l'apôtre le développe jusqu'à la fin de 1Corinthiens 4.

Grec : "Que vous soyez bien établis ou formés (voir ce mot 2Corinthiens 13.11 ; Galates 6.1 ; 1Pierre 5.10 dans le texte grec) dans le même entendement et dans la même opinion."

Le premier de ces termes a rapport à la manière de penser sur les choses religieuses, le second, aux convictions qui en résultent. De l'un et de l'autre naît l'harmonie.

Au reste, ce que demande l'apôtre, ce n'est point une uniformité d'opinion et de langage incompatible avec la liberté et la vie, mais l'union dans la diversité, l'absence de ces divisions (Grec : schismes) qui, en détruisant la communion des âmes et la charité, deviennent un péché.

Dans les grands principes qui animent notre piété, nous devons avoir un même état d’esprit : là où il n'y a pas d’unité, il doit d’abord y avoir un même amour mutuel.

Quand il y a accord sur les principes fondamentaux, cela écarte toute division éventuelle, relative à des sujets mineurs. Nous trouverons dans le ciel une union parfaite ; plus nous rechercherons cette communion mutuelle, plus nous serons proches de la perfection !

Paul et Apollos étaient tous deux, de fidèles serviteurs de Jésus-Christ, comme Ses représentants, par le témoignage de leur foi et de leur joie spirituelle ; mais à Corinthe, ceux qui étaient belliqueux, cherchaient à provoquer des divisions...

Le meilleur est parfois sujet à la corruption : l'Évangile et ses institutions sont hélas un exemple de sujets de désaccords et de querelles. Satan s'est toujours efforcé de provoquer des rivalités parmi les chrétiens ; c’est un de ses principaux moyens pour contrer l'Évangile...

L'apôtre Paul a laissé aux autres serviteurs de Dieu, le soin de baptiser, alors que lui-même se consacrait à la prédication de l'Évangile, estimant qu’il s’agissait ici, d’une tâche plus utile.
