La première de ces désignations du chrétien a rapport à son caractère intérieur, tel qu'il est devenu en Jésus-Christ par une communion vivante avec lui ; la seconde à la libre grâce de Dieu, manifestée dans l'appel efficace à cette sainte destination par la prédication de l'Evangile.

Il ne faut pas traduire cette seconde désignation par "appelés à être saints," mais par "saints par appel ;" l'appel divin est le principe de leur sainteté ; celle-ci repose non sur la vertu de l'homme, mais sur l'élection de Dieu.

- Plus il y avait dans l'Eglise de Corinthe de misères à blâmer, soit dans la doctrine, soit dans la conduite, plus l'apôtre éprouve le besoin d'envisager dans toute sa sainteté le caractère du chrétien et le caractère d'une Eglise, afin de rappeler d'autant plus vivement à ses lecteurs quelle est la hauteur de leur vocation. Il reste donc parfaitement dans le vrai en parlant de la sorte, parce qu'en traçant ce tableau d'une Eglise chrétienne, il se place au point de vue objectif et absolu, parce que tous les membres de cette Eglise faisaient profession de ces principes, et que c'était à eux de juger de leur sincérité, parce qu'enfin les péchés qu'il a à leur reprocher n'étaient pas, selon toute apparence, le fait du plus grand nombre d'entre eux.

Cette dernière considération est clairement démontrée par les versets 4-8, magnifique témoignage adressé à l'église de Corinthe en général, tandis que, lorsque l'apôtre lui reproche des péchés, il indique par des mots comme ceux-ci : Il y a parmi vous...(1Corinthiens 1.11 ; 3.3 ; 5.1, etc.) qu'il ne parle que d'une partie du troupeau.

Ces mots sont intimement liés à ceux qui précèdent : "appelés saints avec tous ceux, etc.," c'est-à-dire dans une communion vivante avec les enfants de Dieu de tous les lieux ; pensée puissante d'unité et d'harmonie, par laquelle l'apôtre élève à l'avance l'âme de ses lecteurs bien au-dessus des malheureuses divisions qu'il va leur reprocher. Ceux qui invoquent le nom du Seigneur Jésus était, dans le siècle apostolique, une expression très usitée pour désigner les chrétiens (Romains 10.13, note ; comparez Actes 9.14,21 ; 22.16), et elle renferme une preuve sans réplique, à la fois de doctrine et de fait, en faveur de la divinité de Jésus-Christ.

Traduction douteuse. Le grec porte : "avec tous ceux qui invoquent le nom de notre Seigneur Jésus-Christ en tout lieu, d'eux et de nous."

Ces derniers mots peuvent se rapporter à tout lieu, ce qui voudrait dire : partout où eux et nous, nous trouvons ; ou bien aux termes Seigneur Jésus-Christ, comme on l'admet dans nos versions, et alors la pensée de l'apôtre serait d'exprimer une sainte communauté d'invocation du même Seigneur. Le premier sens est plus conforme à la construction de la phrase grecque ; l'un et l'autre sont possibles et divisent les interprètes.
