"Où est, ô mort, ton aiguillon ? où est, ô mort, ta victoire ?"

Citation encore plus libre de Osée 13.14. Saisi de la grandeur de son sujet et de la gloire de ses espérances, l'apôtre entonne un chant de triomphe (comparez Romains 8.31-39) sur la défaite des plus terribles ennemis de Christ et du chrétien.

Il emprunte pour cela à Osée cette apostrophe hardie : "Où est ton fléau, ô mort ? Où est ta peste, ô enfer ?" Mais l'apôtre modifie l'élan poétique du prophète à un double égard.

D'abord, au terme de ses instructions profondes sur la résurrection, il adresse deux fois son défi à la mort.

La variante du texte reçu, qui lui fait dire : "ô enfer !" (hadès, le lieu invisible, faussement rendu dans nos versions par sépulcre) n'est qu'une correction selon le passage d'Osée. Ensuite, à ces mots du prophète : où est ton fléau, ta peste ? - il substitue ceux-ci : ton aiguillon, ta victoire.

L'aiguillon est l'arme d'un animal venimeux, d'un scorpion, qui pique et tue. (Comparer le verset suivants, note.)
