Mais maintenant, voici le sens de mes paroles : je vous ai écrit...

Ne pas manger avec un tel homme. Ces mots s'appliquent à l'exclusion de la table privée du croyant et non à l'exclusion de la sainte cène.

L'apôtre veut dire d'une manière générale : Que vous n'ayez avec lui aucune communication d'où il pourrait conclure que vous le regardez en effet comme un frère, bien qu'il en usurpe le nom ; car, par là, vous l'affermiriez dans ses illusions ou dans son hypocrisie.

Combien plus l'Eglise entière doit-elle, dans ses rapports avec un tel homme, exercer cette apostolique discipline ! L'impossibilité où se trouvent tant d'Eglises d'obéir à cet ordre de l'Esprit- Saint, prouve qu'elles ont perdu le caractère de la vraie Eglise chrétienne.
