Paul, trouvant dans l'expression proverbiale qu'il vient de citer un symbole biblique d'une profonde signification pour tout Israélite, s'y arrête, afin de développer sa pensée et de l'appuyer par l'autorité de l'Ecriture.

Le levain avait été sévèrement interdit dans la célébration de la Pâque ; (Exode 12.15-20) quiconque en faisait usage devait être retranché du milieu du peuple ; par où la loi voulait montrer que tout Israélite qui ne célébrait pas réellement la Pâque en s'affranchissant de la servitude du péché et de l'idolâtrie, s'excluait lui-même de la communion du peuple de Dieu.

Puis donc, ajoute Paul, en montrant sous cette image la réalité, puis donc que le véritable Agneau pascal, Christ, a été immolé (les mots pour nous qu'ajoute le texte reçu, ne sont pas authentiques), vous êtes sans levain ; unis à lui par la foi, vous avez été purifiés du levain de la corruption et du péché. Mais cette purification, qui a commencé lors de votre conversion, doit se poursuivre jusqu'à la perfection.

De là, l'exhortation par laquelle il conclut : célébrons la fête (Grec : "fêtons") par une vie sainte, purifiée du vieux levain, dans lequel Paul voit l'image de la corruption naturelle de l'homme, spécialement de la malice et de la méchanceté.

A cela il oppose les pains sans levain, image de la sincérité (comparez sur ce terme 2Corinthiens 1.12, note) et de cette vérité qui n'est que l'harmonie morale entre ce grand et sain souvenir de la mort de Christ et les dispositions de notre cœur.

- Il est possible que Paul, écrivant sa lettre à l'époque de Pâques, (1Corinthiens 16.8) trouve dans cette circonstance l'occasion de recommander ainsi une célébration sincère de cette fête.
