Chapitre 9.

1 à 14 L'apôtre démontre son droit à recevoir son entretien des Eglises.

Le texte reçu place ces deux questions dans un ordre inverse : "Ne suis-je pas apôtre ? ne suis-je pas libre ?" contrairement aux meilleures autorités.

- Paul venait de dire (1Corinthiens 8.13) qu'il se priverait de tout aliment qui pourrait scandaliser son frère. Et pourtant il sait qu'il est libre, aussi libre que ceux qui, à Corinthe, abusaient de leur liberté chrétienne. Bien plus, il est apôtre. Comme apôtre de Jésus-Christ, Paul avait plus encore de liberté et d'autorité que tout autre ; s'il y renonce par charité, son exemple en aura d'autant plus de poids, et humiliera ceux qui s'autorisent de leurs droits pour froisser les consciences faibles. Or, c'est précisément cet exemple de sa vie personnelle qu'il tient à exposer en présence des insinuations de certains adversaires. (verset 3) Il consacre à cela tout ce chapitre, qui n'est point un hors-d'œuvre.

Paul avait probablement vu le Seigneur avant qu'il mourût sur la croix ; mais ce n'est pas de ce temps qu'il parle ici, puisque ce triste privilège, il l'aurait eu en commun avec les ennemis du Sauveur. (Comparer 2Corinthiens 5.16, note.)

Il a vu le Seigneur glorifié (Actes 9.3 et suivants) qui lui est apparu en divers temps, et dont il a reçu des révélations. (Galates 1.1 ; comparez Actes 18.9,10 ; 1Corinthiens 11.23 ; 2Corinthiens 12.1 et suivants)

Il rappelle ces faits pour justifier son caractère apostolique, que niaient ses adversaires en disant qu'il n'avait pas vu le Seigneur, et qu'à cause de cela il ne pouvait pas être le témoin de sa vérité comme les autres apôtres. (Verset 3.) Ainsi parlait sans doute le parti qui se réclamait de Céphas. (1Corinthiens 1.12)

Comme Eglise qu'il avait fondée, et dont les membres avaient été en grande partie amenés par lui à la foi : sceau divin posé par Dieu même sur son apostolat. (verset 2)

- Ce mot dans le Seigneur (versets 1,2) ajoute à la démonstration de l'apôtre quelque chose d'intime et de sacré. Toute son œuvre à l'égard des Corinthiens a eu lieu selon le Seigneur, dans sa communion, en sorte que le Seigneur lui-même en est le témoin et le vrai auteur.

L'apôtre montre son autorité, et affirme son droit à être soutenu matériellement. (1 Corinthiens 9:1-14)
Il a restreint sa liberté chrétienne, (quant au mariage), pour le bien des autres. (1 Corinthiens 9:15-23)
Il a opéré tout cela, avec soin et assiduité, en vue d'une future couronne incorruptible. (1 Corinthiens 9:24-27)

Il n'est pas rare qu’un serviteur de Dieu reçoive des remontrances, malgré sa bonne volonté et les différents services qu’il rend aux autres.

Face aux remarques désagréables de quelques-uns, l'apôtre répond, de façon à prouver qu’il se désintéresse de lui-même, pour le bien des autres. Il avait le droit de se marier, comme les autre apôtres, et de réclamer aux églises, le nécessaire, pour son épouse et ses enfants, sans avoir à travailler pour cela.

Ceux qui s’appliquent à chercher le bien de notre âme doivent recevoir une juste rétribution.

Paul a renoncé au droit de se marier, pour ne pas entraver le succès de son ministère. Nous devons soutenir les serviteurs de Dieu. Ces derniers, s’ils le désirent, peuvent éventuellement ne pas se marier, suivant l’exemple de l’apôtre ; ceux qui refusent de soutenir ces hommes de Dieu, transgressent en fait un précepte de Christ...
