World English Bible If anyone sees his brother sinning a sin not leading to death, he shall ask, and God will give him life for those who sin not leading to death. There is a sin leading to death. I don't say that he should make a request concerning this.

La priĂšre du chrĂ©tien pour lui-mĂȘme (versets 14,15) devient nĂ©cessairement priĂšre pour ses frĂšres, au moyen de la communion intime et vivante qui les unit et qui confond leurs intĂ©rĂȘts Ă©ternels dans un mĂȘme amour.

Ainsi tout fidÚle qui voit son frÚre pécher et qui l'aime, deviendra son intercesseur auprÚs de Dieu ; et il a ici la miséricordieuse promesse qu'il rendra à cette ùme la pardon et la vie. Il demandera et il lui donnera la vie.

Quel est le sujet de ce dernier verbe ? Les uns rĂ©pondent : Dieu, et la plupart de nos versions introduisent ce mot dans le texte. Mais il est plus naturel de donner aux deux verbes le mĂȘme sujet : le frĂšre qui prie, dont il est encore question Ă  la fin du verset. Il donnera la vie Ă  celui pour qui il intercĂ©dera, en lui procurant par sa priĂšre le pardon et le secours de Dieu. (Comparer Jacques 5.15) Telle est, d'aprĂšs l'apĂŽtre, la puissance de la priĂšre, qu'elle met le croyant, pour ainsi dire, en possession de la toute-puissance de Dieu. A une condition toutefois : c'est que le pĂ©cheur pour lequel on prie ne pĂšche pas d'un pĂ©chĂ© Ă  la mort.

Que faut-il entendre par là ? Non pas un acte isolĂ©, une transgression quelque grave qu'elle soit de la loi de Dieu, et dans laquelle un chrĂ©tien serait tombĂ© par faiblesse, par manque de vigilance, ou par l'entraĂźnement d'une tentation ; mais ce pĂ©chĂ© Ă  la mort rĂ©vĂšle un Ă©tat de mort spirituelle oĂč est arrivĂ©e une Ăąme qui a connu la vĂ©ritĂ© et commencĂ© de vivre la vie nouvelle.

Une longue suite de péchés volontaires, la négligence des moyens de grùce, les séductions du monde, peuvent amener un tel état, qui a beaucoup de rapport avec le péché contre le SaintEsprit. (Matthieu 12.31,32) Alors, toute communion avec Dieu ayant cessé par l'abandon du Sauveur, l'ùme devient étrangÚre aussi à la communion fraternelle et échappe aux influences bénies de l'intercession.

Jean ne dĂ©fend pas de prier pour ce pĂ©chĂ©-lĂ  mais il ne le commande pas : Je ne dis pas (grec) qu'il prie pour ce pĂ©chĂ©-lĂ . Et comme il arrive rarement que l'homme ait une connaissance suffisante et une conviction bien fondĂ©e d'un tel Ă©tat d'Ăąme chez son frĂšre, il convient de ne faire usage de cet avertissement de l'apĂŽtre qu'avec une extrĂȘme prudence et selon les conseils d'une vraie charitĂ©.

Pour rassurer les chrétiens sincÚres, mais toujours faillibles, l'apÎtre ajoute : (verset 17) Sans doute, toute iniquité, tout ce qui est contraire à la volonté de Dieu, (1Jean 2.29 ; 3.7) est péché, et le chrétien, qui pratique la justice selon que son Dieu Sauveur est "juste," (1Jean 3.7) ne doit pas le tolérer dans sa vie ; mais il peut, malgré tout, se trouver chez lui tel péché, qu'il reconnaßt, dont il se repent, que Dieu pardonne et qui dÚs lors ne détruit point le principe de la vie, n'est point à la mort. (1Jean 1.9 ; 2.1)
