Nouvelle expression de l'assurance que possèdent ceux qui sont de Dieu, nés de lui ; (verset 18) mais aussi, dans l'état du monde corrompu, un sérieux motif de vigilance et d'humilité.

- Grec : le monde gît dans le mal. Ce dernier mot peut signifier en grec le mal moral, ou le malin, le démon. Plusieurs lui donnent cette signification, qu'il a à verset 18, et dans 1Jean 2.13,14 ; 3.12, ils traduisent : est au pouvoir du malin.

D'autres estiment que le verbe : être gisant dans est plus favorable au premier sens.
