4 à 10 Christ, pierre de l'angle ; la maison spirituelle, le peuple de Dieu.

L'image de la nutrition et de la croissance s'appliquait à la sanctification individuelle ; une nouvelle comparaison va caractériser le développement collectif des chrétiens formant une société.

Christ est désigné comme la pierre de l'angle, supportant l'édifice. (verset 6) Cette qualification était connue des lecteurs de l'Ancien Testament. (Esaïe 28.16 ; 8.14 ; Psaumes 118.22. Comparer Matthieu 21.42 ; Actes 4.11)

Mais l'apôtre y ajoute une idée nouvelle par l'épithète pierre vivante : Christ n'est pas seulement la pierre angulaire de son Eglise ; il en est la vie, comme la racine d'un arbre qui, à la fois, le fixe au sol et le nourrit. (Jean 15.1 et suiv) C'est pourquoi aussi ceux qui sont édifiés sur lui sont des "pierres vivantes." (verset 5 ; comparez sur ce mot 1Pierre 1.3, note)

- Cette pierre est, dans tous les temps, réprouvée des hommes, mais devant Dieu, choisie et précieuse. Pour entrer dans l'édifice que Christ supporte, dont il est la vie, il faut s'approcher de lui, entrer avec lui dans une communion vivante. (verset 5)

- Notre apôtre lui-même avait été désigné comme "la pierre" sur laquelle Jésus "bâtirait son Eglise ;" (Matthieu 16.18 1re note) mais il ne pouvait en être le fondement vivant, capable de donner la vie aux autres pierres de l'édifice.

Le terme grec employé dans Matthieu 16.18 n'est pas le même que dans notre épître. Il a plutôt le sens de "roche," tandis qu'ici, et dans les passages de l'Ancien Testament auxquels l'auteur fait allusion, c'est le mot qui signifie proprement pierre.
