Segond 21 Après avoir demandé conseil, le roi fabriqua deux veaux d'or et dit au peuple : « Cela fait assez longtemps que vous montez à Jérusalem. *Israël, voici tes dieux qui t'ont fait sortir d'Egypte. »

Segond 1910 Après s'être consulté, le roi fit deux veaux d'or, et il dit au peuple : Assez longtemps vous êtes montés à Jérusalem ; Israël ! voici ton Dieu, qui t'a fait sortir du pays d'Égypte.

Ayant pris conseil : avec lui-même.

Veaux d'or : figures de jeunes taureaux, symboles de la puissance créatrice de Dieu ; d'après 2Rois 17.16, elles étaient de fonte d'airain recouverte d'or plaqué.

Assez longtemps. Le roi dissimule les véritables motifs de son action sous une apparente sollicitude pour le bien de son peuple.

Voici ton Dieu... comparez Exode 32.4,8. En parlant ainsi, Jéroboam voulait sans doute ôter à ses nouvelles institutions religieuses le caractère d'une innovation.

Ton Dieu, non : tes dieux. C'était l'Eternel que les veaux d'or devaient représenter. Jéroboam maintenait l'unité de Dieu et respectait le premier commandement de la loi, mais il transgressait le second, en introduisant l'adoration de l'Eternel sous des images (Exode 20.4).
