David et Goliath
1 Les Philistins réunissent leurs armées pour aller faire la guerre. Ils se rassemblent dans la ville de Soko en Juda et ils installent leur camp à Éfès-Dammim, entre Soko et Azéca.2 Saül et l’armée d’Israël se rassemblent et s’installent dans la vallée du Térébinthe. Puis ils se mettent en ordre de combat contre les Philistins.3 Les Philistins sont sur une colline, et les Israélites sur une autre. Une vallée les sépare.4 Un soldat philistin quitte le rang et il s’avance entre les deux armées. Il cherche quelqu’un qui peut se battre contre lui. Ce soldat est de la ville de Gath. Il s’appelle Goliath. Il mesure à peu près trois mètres.5 Sur sa tête, il a mis un casque de bronze. Il a des plaques de bronze autour des jambes. Il porte une cuirasse faite en écailles de bronze. Cette cuirasse pèse 60 kilos. Sur sa poitrine, en travers, il porte une arme de bronze.7 Le bois de sa lance est gros comme la barre d’un métier à tisser. La pointe de fer au bout de la lance pèse plus de sept kilos. Celui qui porte son bouclier marche devant lui.8 Goliath s’arrête et il crie aux soldats d’Israël : « Vous vous mettez en ordre de combat. Pourquoi donc ? Je suis un Philistin, et vous, vous êtes les esclaves de Saül. Choisissez parmi vous un homme pour lutter contre moi.9 S’il arrive à me battre et s’il me tue, les Philistins deviendront vos esclaves. Mais si c’est moi qui arrive à le battre et si je le tue, c’est vous qui deviendrez nos esclaves. »10 Et il ajoute encore : « Aujourd’hui, je provoque l’armée d’Israël. Envoyez-moi un homme, et nous allons lutter l’un contre l’autre. »11 Quand Saül et toute l’armée d’Israël entendent ce que Goliath dit, ils sont paralysés par la peur.12 David est fils de Jessé, du clan d’Éfrata. Il habite à Bethléem, dans le pays de Juda. Jessé a huit fils et, au temps de Saül, il est très âgé.13 Ses trois fils aînés, Éliab, Abinadab et Chamma, sont partis faire la guerre avec Saül. David est le plus jeune.15 Il a l’habitude d’aller servir Saül quelque temps, puis de revenir garder les moutons de son père, à Bethléem.16 Pendant 40 jours, Goliath le Philistin se présente matin et soir devant l’armée d’Israël.17 Un jour, Jessé dit à David : « Prends ce sac de grains grillés et ces dix pains, va vite au camp militaire. Tu les donneras à tes frères.18 Prends aussi ces dix fromages et donne-les à leur commandant. Va voir si tes frères sont en bonne santé et rapporte-moi quelque chose qui me montrera que tout va bien là-bas.19 Tu vas les trouver avec Saül et toute l’armée d’Israël. Ils sont dans la vallée du Térébinthe, en train de faire la guerre aux Philistins. »20 Le jour suivant, David se lève tôt le matin. Il laisse ses moutons à un gardien. Il prend les cadeaux et il se met en route, comme son père Jessé l’a dit. Il arrive au camp d’Israël. À ce moment-là, l’armée d’Israël se prépare pour le combat, et les soldats poussent le cri de guerre.21 Les Israélites et les Philistins se mettent en ordre de combat.22 David laisse ses cadeaux près du gardien des bagages et il court vers les soldats. Quand il trouve ses frères, il leur demande s’ils sont en bonne santé.23 Au moment où il parle avec eux, le Philistin de Gath qui s’appelle Goliath s’avance devant son armée. Et comme d’habitude, il se met à provoquer les Israélites. David entend tout ce qu’il dit.24 Quand les Israélites voient Goliath, ils ont tous très peur et ils reculent.25 Chacun dit : « Vous voyez cet homme-là ! Il vient nous provoquer. C’est pourquoi il s’avance vers nous. Si quelqu’un réussit à le tuer, le roi lui donnera beaucoup de richesses. Il lui donnera sa fille en mariage, et la famille de son père ne paiera plus d’impôts en Israël. »26 David demande aux soldats qui sont près de lui : « Qui est ce Philistin non circoncis qui se permet d’insulter l’armée du Dieu vivant ? Qu’est-ce qu’on va donner à celui qui tuera ce Philistin pour effacer l’insulte lancée contre Israël ? »27 Les soldats redisent à David tout ce que le roi donnera à cet homme-là.28 Mais Éliab, son frère aîné, entend ce que David demande aux soldats. Alors, il se fâche et il dit à David : « Pourquoi est-ce que tu es venu ici ? À qui est-ce que tu as laissé ton petit troupeau dans le désert ? Je te connais bien, petit orgueilleux, ton cœur est mauvais ! C’est pour voir le combat que tu es venu ! »29 David lui répond : « Qu’est-ce que j’ai fait de mal ? J’ai simplement posé une question. »30 David tourne le dos à son frère et pose la même question à un autre soldat. Il répète cette question à d’autres soldats. Chacun lui donne la même réponse.31 Tout le monde entend parler des questions posées par David. Le roi Saül lui-même apprend cela. Il fait tout de suite venir David.32 Celui-ci dit au roi : « Personne ne doit se décourager à cause de ce Philistin. Moi, j’irai me battre contre lui. »33 Saül lui répond : « Non, tu ne peux pas aller te battre contre lui. Toi, tu n’es qu’un jeune garçon, et lui, c’est un soldat depuis sa jeunesse. »34 Alors David dit : « Quand je garde les moutons de mon père, si un lion ou un autre animal sauvage vient et prend un mouton du troupeau35 je cours derrière lui. Je le frappe et j’arrache le mouton de sa gueule. Et s’il vient contre moi, je le saisis à la gorge et je le tue.36 Voilà comment je fais pour tuer les lions et les autres animaux sauvages. Je vais faire la même chose à ce Philistin non circoncis qui a insulté l’armée du Dieu vivant.37 Le SEIGNEUR me protège des griffes du lion et des autres animaux sauvages. Il va aussi me protéger des attaques de ce Philistin. » Alors Saül dit à David : « Pars donc, et que le SEIGNEUR soit avec toi ! »38 Saül donne à David son équipement de guerre. Il lui met son casque de bronze sur la tête et il l’habille de sa cuirasse.39 David met encore l’épée de Saül par-dessus la cuirasse. Il essaie d’avancer, mais il n’y arrive pas. En effet, il n’est pas habitué à cet équipement. Alors il dit à Saül : « Avec tout cela, je ne peux pas marcher, je n’ai pas l’habitude. » Et il enlève l’équipement de Saül.40 David prend son bâton et il va choisir cinq pierres bien lisses au bord du torrent. Il les met dans son sac de berger. Il prend sa fronde dans sa main et s’avance vers Goliath.41 Goliath s’approche petit à petit de David. L’homme qui porte son bouclier marche devant lui.42 Goliath regarde David. Quand il le voit, il le juge comme un petit rien-du-tout. En effet, David est encore jeune. Il a le teint clair et un beau visage.43 Alors Goliath crie à David : « Tu viens contre moi avec un bâton ! Tu me prends donc pour un chien ! » Et il lance à David des malédictions de la part des dieux philistins.44 Il crie encore : « Viens ici ! Je vais donner ton corps à manger aux oiseaux et aux animaux sauvages ! »45 David lui dit : « Toi, tu viens contre moi avec une épée, une lance et une autre arme. Et moi, je viens contre toi au nom du SEIGNEUR de l’univers, le Dieu de l’armée d’Israël que tu as insulté !46 Aujourd’hui même, le SEIGNEUR va te livrer à moi. Je vais te tuer et te couper la tête ! Aujourd’hui même, je vais donner les corps des soldats philistins aux oiseaux et aux animaux sauvages, qui les mangeront. Alors tout le monde apprendra que les Israélites ont un Dieu.47 Et tous les Israélites rassemblés ici le sauront : le SEIGNEUR n’a pas besoin d’épée ni de lance pour donner la victoire. Il est le maître de cette guerre et il va vous livrer en notre pouvoir ! »48 Goliath se remet à marcher vers David. Alors David court très vite vers Goliath sur le terrain du combat.49 Il prend une pierre dans son sac. Il la lance avec sa fronde, et la pierre va frapper le front de Goliath. Elle s’enfonce dans son front, et Goliath tombe, le visage contre le sol.50 Ainsi, avec une fronde et une pierre, David a été plus fort que Goliath le Philistin. Il l’a fait tomber et il l’a tué, sans épée.51 David court et s’arrête près de Goliath. Il tire l’épée de Goliath de son étui et il lui coupe la tête. Alors, quand les Philistins voient que leur champion est mort, ils se mettent à fuir.52 Les soldats d’Israël et de Juda poussent leur cri de guerre et ils poursuivent les Philistins jusqu’à l’entrée de Gath et d’Écron. Les corps des Philistins couvrent la route de Chaaraïm jusqu’à Gath et Écron.53 Puis les Israélites arrêtent de poursuivre les Philistins et ils reviennent piller leur camp.54 David prend la tête de Goliath et il l’apporte à Jérusalem. Il met les armes du Philistin dans sa tente.Jonatan conclut un pacte d'amitié avec David
55 Saül a vu David partir pour combattre Goliath. À ce moment-là, il a dit à Abner, le chef de son armée : « Abner, ce garçon est le fils de qui ? » Abner a répondu : « Je n’en sais rien du tout, mon roi. »56 Saül a dit : « Renseigne-toi pour le savoir. »57 C’est pourquoi, quand David revient au camp après avoir tué Goliath, Abner va le chercher et le présente à Saül. Il a encore la tête du Philistin dans ses mains.58 Saül lui demande : « Tu es le fils de qui, jeune homme ? » David répond : « Je suis le fils de ton serviteur Jessé, de Bethléem. » -

1 Now the Philistines gathered together their armies to battle; and they were gathered together at Socoh, which belongs to Judah, and encamped between Socoh and Azekah, in Ephesdammim.2 Saul and the men of Israel were gathered together, and encamped in the valley of Elah, and set the battle in array against the Philistines.3 The Philistines stood on the mountain on the one side, and Israel stood on the mountain on the other side: and there was a valley between them.4 There went out a champion out of the camp of the Philistines, named Goliath, of Gath, whose height was six cubits and a span.5 He had a helmet of brass on his head, and he was clad with a coat of mail; and the weight of the coat was five thousand shekels of brass.6 He had brass shin armor on his legs, and a javelin of brass between his shoulders.7 The staff of his spear was like a weaver's beam; and his spear's head weighed six hundred shekels of iron: and his shield bearer went before him.8 He stood and cried to the armies of Israel, and said to them, "Why have you come out to set your battle in array? Am I not a Philistine, and you servants to Saul? Choose a man for yourselves, and let him come down to me.9 If he be able to fight with me, and kill me, then will we be your servants; but if I prevail against him, and kill him, then you will be our servants, and serve us."10 The Philistine said, "I defy the armies of Israel this day! Give me a man, that we may fight together!"11 When Saul and all Israel heard those words of the Philistine, they were dismayed, and greatly afraid.12 Now David was the son of that Ephrathite of Bethlehem Judah, whose name was Jesse; and he had eight sons: and the man was an old man in the days of Saul, stricken among men.13 The three eldest sons of Jesse had gone after Saul to the battle: and the names of his three sons who went to the battle were Eliab the firstborn, and next to him Abinadab, and the third Shammah.14 David was the youngest; and the three eldest followed Saul.15 Now David went back and forth from Saul to feed his father's sheep at Bethlehem.16 The Philistine drew near morning and evening, and presented himself forty days.17 Jesse said to David his son, "Now take for your brothers an ephah of this parched grain, and these ten loaves, and carry them quickly to the camp to your brothers;18 and bring these ten cheeses to the captain of their thousand, and see how your brothers are doing, and bring back news."19 Now Saul, and they, and all the men of Israel, were in the valley of Elah, fighting with the Philistines.20 David rose up early in the morning, and left the sheep with a keeper, and took, and went, as Jesse had commanded him; and he came to the place of the wagons, as the army which was going forth to the fight shouted for the battle.21 Israel and the Philistines put the battle in array, army against army.22 David left his baggage in the hand of the keeper of the baggage, and ran to the army, and came and greeted his brothers.23 As he talked with them, behold, there came up the champion, the Philistine of Gath, Goliath by name, out of the ranks of the Philistines, and spoke according to the same words: and David heard them.24 All the men of Israel, when they saw the man, fled from him, and were terrified.25 The men of Israel said, "Have you seen this man who has come up? He has surely come up to defy Israel. It shall be, that the man who kills him, the king will enrich him with great riches, and will give him his daughter, and make his father's house free in Israel."26 David spoke to the men who stood by him, saying, "What shall be done to the man who kills this Philistine, and takes away the reproach from Israel? For who is this uncircumcised Philistine, that he should defy the armies of the living God?"27 The people answered him in this way, saying, "So shall it be done to the man who kills him."28 Eliab his eldest brother heard when he spoke to the men; and Eliab's anger was kindled against David, and he said, "Why have you come down? With whom have you left those few sheep in the wilderness? I know your pride, and the naughtiness of your heart; for you have come down that you might see the battle."29 David said, "What have I now done? Is there not a cause?"30 He turned away from him toward another, and spoke like that again; and the people answered him again the same way.31 When the words were heard which David spoke, they rehearsed them before Saul; and he sent for him.32 David said to Saul, "Let no man's heart fail because of him. Your servant will go and fight with this Philistine."33 Saul said to David, "You are not able to go against this Philistine to fight with him; for you are but a youth, and he a man of war from his youth."34 David said to Saul, "Your servant was keeping his father's sheep; and when a lion or a bear came, and took a lamb out of the flock,35 I went out after him, and struck him, and rescued it out of his mouth. When he arose against me, I caught him by his beard, and struck him, and killed him.36 Your servant struck both the lion and the bear. This uncircumcised Philistine shall be as one of them, since he has defied the armies of the living God."37 David said, "Yahweh who delivered me out of the paw of the lion, and out of the paw of the bear, he will deliver me out of the hand of this Philistine." Saul said to David, "Go; and Yahweh shall be with you."38 Saul dressed David with his clothing. He put a helmet of brass on his head, and he clad him with a coat of mail.39 David strapped his sword on his clothing, and he tried to move; for he had not tested it. David said to Saul, "I can't go with these; for I have not tested them." David took them off.40 He took his staff in his hand, and chose for himself five smooth stones out of the brook, and put them in the shepherd's bag which he had, even in his wallet. His sling was in his hand; and he drew near to the Philistine.41 The Philistine came on and drew near to David; and the man who bore the shield went before him.42 When the Philistine looked about, and saw David, he disdained him; for he was but a youth, and ruddy, and withal of a fair face.43 The Philistine said to David, "Am I a dog, that you come to me with sticks?" The Philistine cursed David by his gods.44 The Philistine said to David, "Come to me, and I will give your flesh to the birds of the sky, and to the animals of the field."45 Then David said to the Philistine, "You come to me with a sword, and with a spear, and with a javelin: but I come to you in the name of Yahweh of Armies, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied.46 Today, Yahweh will deliver you into my hand. I will strike you, and take your head from off you. I will give the dead bodies of the army of the Philistines this day to the birds of the sky, and to the wild animals of the earth; that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel,47 and that all this assembly may know that Yahweh doesn't save with sword and spear: for the battle is Yahweh's, and he will give you into our hand."48 It happened, when the Philistine arose, and came and drew near to meet David, that David hurried, and ran toward the army to meet the Philistine.49 David put his hand in his bag, took a stone, and slung it, and struck the Philistine in his forehead; and the stone sank into his forehead, and he fell on his face to the earth.50 So David prevailed over the Philistine with a sling and with a stone, and struck the Philistine, and killed him; but there was no sword in the hand of David.51 Then David ran, and stood over the Philistine, and took his sword, and drew it out of its sheath, and killed him, and cut off his head therewith. When the Philistines saw that their champion was dead, they fled.52 The men of Israel and of Judah arose, and shouted, and pursued the Philistines, until you come to Gai, and to the gates of Ekron. The wounded of the Philistines fell down by the way to Shaaraim, even to Gath, and to Ekron.53 The children of Israel returned from chasing after the Philistines, and they plundered their camp.54 David took the head of the Philistine, and brought it to Jerusalem; but he put his armor in his tent.Jonatan conclut un pacte d'amitié avec David
55 When Saul saw David go forth against the Philistine, he said to Abner, the captain of the army, "Abner, whose son is this youth?" Abner said, "As your soul lives, O king, I can't tell."56 The king said, "Inquire whose son the young man is!"57 As David returned from the slaughter of the Philistine, Abner took him, and brought him before Saul with the head of the Philistine in his hand.58 Saul said to him, "Whose son are you, you young man?" David answered, "I am the son of your servant Jesse the Bethlehemite." -
