David se trouve en ce moment dans la même position que Jephthé (Juges 11.3) et il a recours aux mêmes moyens. Mais rien n'autorise à lui attribuer une vie de brigandage. Le récit de son séjour dans le voisinage de Nabal jette du jour sur la manière dont il pourvoyait à la subsistance de sa troupe. Nous ne le voyons user de violence que contre les ennemis du peuple (27.8). Dans la suite du récit David donnera de telles preuves de respect pour la personne du roi, qu'il est impossible de faire de lui un rebelle à l'autorité des lois.
