Ces mots appartiennent encore aux signes de l'élection des chrétiens de Thessalonique, (verset 3) et même l'apôtre en développe avec amour les témoignages jusqu'à la fin de ce chapitre.

Ils ont été ses imitateurs et il ne craint pas de recommander cette imitation à ceux qu'il a amenés à la foi ; (1Corinthiens 4.16 ; 11.1 ; Philippiens 3.17) mais pour qu'ils ne se méprennent pas sur la portée de son exhortation et ne perdent pas de vue le seul modèle parfait, il ajoute : et du Seigneur.

Et de plus, en quoi ont-ils été les imitateurs du Seigneur et de ses apôtres ? Non en ce qu'ils ont reçu l'Evangile, mais en ce qu'ils l'ont reçu au milieu de beaucoup d'afflictions, et cela avec la joie du Saint-Esprit, c'est-à-dire une joie que le Saint-Esprit seul peut inspirer et entretenir. (Romains 14.17 ; Colossiens 1.11 ; comparez Actes 5.41)

Lorsque des personnes insouciantes, ignorantes, et immorales sont détournées de leurs vaines poursuites et de leurs convoitises charnelles, pour croire au Seigneur et Lui obéir, en vue de vivre sobrement, vertueusement et pieusement, le résultat parle de lui-même !

Sous l'Ancien Testament, les croyants attendaient l’arrivée du Messie ; désormais, ils attendent Sa seconde venue. Ceci doit se produire bientôt. Dieu a ressuscité Son Fils ; cela représente pour tous les hommes, la pleine assurance spirituelle, qu'Il reviendra, pour le jour du Jugement.

Christ est venu une première fois pour assurer le salut aux hommes ; lorsqu'Il reviendra, Il viendra au devant des rachetés, ceux qui auront bénéficié de cette rédemption, qui les délivre pleinement et définitivement de la colère céleste à venir.

Fuyons sans attendre cette colère divine, cherchons le refuge en Christ, en Son salut !
