Cette exhortation complète et modifie la précédente ; les chrétiens ne devaient point mépriser le don de prophétie, mais tout aussi peu recevoir sans examen tout homme qui prétendait à ce don, et toute doctrine qu'il apportait. De là cette particule adversative (mais) omise à tort par le texte reçu.

De là aussi il ressort d'après le contexte, que ces mots : mais éprouvez toutes choses, ne doivent pas se prendre dans le sens universel qu'on leur donne ordinairement ; ils s'appliquent immédiatement au discernement des esprits. (1Corinthiens 12.10 ; 1Jean 4.1)

Paul n'établit point la raison comme juge de la révélation ; mais, selon l'ordre de Dieu, les opérations et les dons de son Esprit sont divers, en sorte que si les uns ont mission de parler dans l'Église, les autres doivent "éprouver les esprits, afin de savoir s'ils viennent de Dieu."

Et pour cela même il faut à ces derniers une mesure, une règle, qui n'est autre que la vérité de Dieu, sa Parole, l'enseignement apostolique, rendu vivant dans l'expérience par le Saint-Esprit. Ce double témoignage est nécessaire pour ne retenir que ce qui est bon et rejeter tout le reste.
