Le texte reçu ajoute à ces mots : je dis la vérité, ceux-ci : en Christ, empruntés à Romains 9.1.

- Cette affirmation solennelle de son apostolat n'était pas nécessaire pour Timothée, mais bien pour les adversaires.

Pour les instruire dans la foi et dans la vérité. D'autres pensent que ces mots caractérisent la fidélité et la véracité avec laquelle Paul s'acquitte de son apostolat. Cette interprétation n'est pas admissible. Il s'agit de la foi comme élément subjectif de la vie chrétienne et de la vérité révélée, qui en est l'élément objectif. Paul en appelle à sa vocation comme prédicateur, apôtre et docteur (termes accumulés à dessein) des païens, pour prouver l'universalité du salut offert par l'Evangile, (1Timothée 2.3) de même qu'il en appelait naguère (1Timothée 1.12-16) à sa conversion pour établir la gratuité de la miséricorde de Dieu envers les plus grands pécheurs.

Ce genre d'argumentation a beaucoup de force ; car dans toute l'histoire de son règne, c'est par des faits que Dieu manifeste ses desseins et sa volonté.
