Grec : "Le beau combat de la foi :" cette noble lutte qui se livre au dedans, pour conserver et augmenter toutes les précieuses grâces indiquées à 1Timothée 6.11 comme l'objet d'une sainte ambition ; au dehors contre les ennemis de la vérité et contre le monde. (Comparer 2Timothée 4.7)

Comme on saisit le prix du combat ou de la course. (1Corinthiens 9.24,25 ; Philippiens 3.14, note ; Hébreux 12.1-4)

Grec : "Ayant confessé la belle confession en présence de plusieurs témoins." Allusion à quelque trait de la vie de Timothée qui nous est inconnu. Peut-être s'agit-il de la confession de la vérité qu'il fit lors de son baptême, ou en s'engageant au service de Dieu dans le ministère, (comparez 1Timothée 4.14) ou enfin, ce qui est plus probable, en présence de quelque danger ; cela explique pourquoi l'apôtre rappelle ici (1Timothée 6.13) la confession que le Sauveur fit de la vérité devant Ponce Pilate et en face de la mort.
