Le trésor de la foi, de la saine doctrine, de la "vie véritable." (Comparer 2Timothée 1.12,14)

Grec : "Les antithèses d'une connaissance au nom menteur." C'est par ces mots que Paul désigne plus directement ces discours vains et profanes. (Comparer 1Timothée 1.6)

Déjà alors les faux docteurs se vantaient d'une science (gnosis) qui, au second siècle, leur valut le nom de gnostiques, les connaisseurs, les savants, par opposition aux simples croyants.

Au moyen de ces antithèses ou contradictions qu'ils prétendaient trouver dans les objets de la foi, ils pensaient embarrasser les fidèles dans des difficultés dont leur science seule pouvait fournir la solution.

D'autres interprètes voient dans ces antithèses simplement les principes ou doctrines que ces hommes opposaient aux principes et aux doctrines de l'Evangile.

Ce terme aurait été choisi parce que cette opposition se serait manifestée par une polémique pour laquelle on employait le langage de l'école. Quoi qu'il en soit, le fondement de la foi qu'ils disaient vouloir conserver leur échappait entièrement. (1Timothée 6.21) Cette triste expérience des premiers temps s'est renouvelée à travers tous les âges, et jusqu'à nos jours.
