Le royaume de Juda attaqué. Prière de Josaphat
1 It happened after this, that the children of Moab, and the children of Ammon, and with them some of the Ammonites, came against Jehoshaphat to battle.2 Then some came who told Jehoshaphat, saying, "A great multitude is coming against you from beyond the sea from Syria. Behold, they are in Hazazon Tamar" (that is, En Gedi).3 Jehoshaphat was alarmed, and set himself to seek to Yahweh. He proclaimed a fast throughout all Judah.4 Judah gathered themselves together, to seek help from Yahweh. They came out of all the cities of Judah to seek Yahweh.5 Jehoshaphat stood in the assembly of Judah and Jerusalem, in the house of Yahweh, before the new court;6 and he said, "Yahweh, the God of our fathers, aren't you God in heaven? Aren't you ruler over all the kingdoms of the nations? Power and might are in your hand, so that no one is able to withstand you.7 Didn't you, our God, drive out the inhabitants of this land before your people Israel, and give it to the seed of Abraham your friend forever?8 They lived in it, and have built you a sanctuary in it for your name, saying,9 'If evil comes on us--the sword, judgment, pestilence, or famine--we will stand before this house, and before you, (for your name is in this house), and cry to you in our affliction, and you will hear and save.'10 Now, behold, the children of Ammon and Moab and Mount Seir, whom you would not let Israel invade, when they came out of the land of Egypt, but they turned aside from them, and didn't destroy them;11 behold, how they reward us, to come to cast us out of your possession, which you have given us to inherit.12 Our God, will you not judge them? For we have no might against this great company that comes against us; neither know we what to do, but our eyes are on you."13 All Judah stood before Yahweh, with their little ones, their wives, and their children.Le Seigneur donne la victoire aux Judéens
14 Then the Spirit of Yahweh came on Jahaziel the son of Zechariah, the son of Benaiah, the son of Jeiel, the son of Mattaniah, the Levite, of the sons of Asaph, in the midst of the assembly;15 and he said, "Listen, all Judah, and you inhabitants of Jerusalem, and you king Jehoshaphat. Thus says Yahweh to you, 'Don't be afraid, neither be dismayed by reason of this great multitude; for the battle is not yours, but God's.16 Tomorrow go down against them. Behold, they are coming up by the ascent of Ziz. You shall find them at the end of the valley, before the wilderness of Jeruel.17 You will not need to fight this battle. Set yourselves, stand still, and see the salvation of Yahweh with you, O Judah and Jerusalem. Don't be afraid, nor be dismayed. Go out against them tomorrow, for Yahweh is with you.'"18 Jehoshaphat bowed his head with his face to the ground; and all Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem fell down before Yahweh, worshipping Yahweh.19 The Levites, of the children of the Kohathites and of the children of the Korahites, stood up to praise Yahweh, the God of Israel, with an exceeding loud voice.20 They rose early in the morning, and went forth into the wilderness of Tekoa: and as they went forth, Jehoshaphat stood and said, "Listen to me, Judah, and you inhabitants of Jerusalem! Believe in Yahweh your God, so you shall be established! Believe his prophets, so you shall prosper."21 When he had taken counsel with the people, he appointed those who should sing to Yahweh, and give praise in holy array, as they went out before the army, and say, Give thanks to Yahweh; for his loving kindness endures forever.22 When they began to sing and to praise, Yahweh set ambushers against the children of Ammon, Moab, and Mount Seir, who had come against Judah; and they were struck.23 For the children of Ammon and Moab stood up against the inhabitants of Mount Seir, utterly to kill and destroy them: and when they had made an end of the inhabitants of Seir, everyone helped to destroy another.24 When Judah came to the place overlooking the wilderness, they looked at the multitude; and behold, they were dead bodies fallen to the earth, and there were none who escaped.25 When Jehoshaphat and his people came to take their spoil, they found among them in abundance both riches and dead bodies, and precious jewels, which they stripped off for themselves, more than they could carry away: and they were three days in taking the spoil, it was so much.26 On the fourth day they assembled themselves in the valley of Beracah; for there they blessed Yahweh: therefore the name of that place was called The valley of Beracah to this day.27 Then they returned, every man of Judah and Jerusalem, and Jehoshaphat in their forefront, to go again to Jerusalem with joy; for Yahweh had made them to rejoice over their enemies.28 They came to Jerusalem with stringed instruments and harps and trumpets to the house of Yahweh.29 The fear of God was on all the kingdoms of the countries, when they heard that Yahweh fought against the enemies of Israel.30 So the realm of Jehoshaphat was quiet; for his God gave him rest all around.Fin du règne de Josaphat
31 Jehoshaphat reigned over Judah: he was thirty-five years old when he began to reign; and he reigned twenty-five years in Jerusalem: and his mother's name was Azubah the daughter of Shilhi.32 He walked in the way of Asa his father, and didn't turn aside from it, doing that which was right in the eyes of Yahweh.33 However the high places were not taken away; neither as yet had the people set their hearts to the God of their fathers.34 Now the rest of the acts of Jehoshaphat, first and last, behold, they are written in the history of Jehu the son of Hanani, which is inserted in the book of the kings of Israel.35 After this Jehoshaphat king of Judah joined himself with Ahaziah king of Israel. The same did very wickedly:36 and he joined himself with him to make ships to go to Tarshish; and they made the ships in Ezion Geber.37 Then Eliezer the son of Dodavahu of Mareshah prophesied against Jehoshaphat, saying, "Because you have joined yourself with Ahaziah, Yahweh has destroyed your works." The ships were broken, so that they were not able to go to Tarshish. -

1 Après cela, les Moabites et les Ammonites, accompagnés de Maonites, marchèrent contre Josaphat pour lui faire la guerre.2 On vint annoncer à Josaphat : « Une foule nombreuse s'avance contre toi depuis l'autre côté de la mer, depuis la Syrie, et ils sont déjà à Hatsatson-Thamar, c’est-à-dire En-Guédi. »3 Josaphat eut peur et décida de chercher l'Eternel. Il proclama un jeûne pour tout Juda.4 Les Judéens se rassemblèrent pour supplier l'Eternel ; c’est même de toutes les villes de Juda que l’on vint pour chercher l'Eternel.5 Josaphat se tint debout au milieu de l'assemblée de Juda et de Jérusalem, dans la maison de l'Eternel, devant le nouveau parvis,6 et dit : « Eternel, Dieu de nos ancêtres, n’est-ce pas toi qui es Dieu dans le ciel et n'est-ce pas toi qui domines sur tous les royaumes des nations ? N'est-ce pas toi qui détiens la force et la puissance, toi à qui personne ne peut résister ?7 N'est-ce pas toi, notre Dieu, qui as dépossédé les habitants de ce pays devant ton peuple, devant Israël, et qui l'as donné pour toujours à la descendance d'Abraham, ton ami ?8 Ils l'ont habité et ils t'y ont construit un sanctuaire en l’honneur de ton nom en disant :9 ‘Si un malheur nous atteint – que ce soit l'épée, le jugement, la peste ou la famine – nous nous présenterons devant ce temple et devant toi, car ton nom réside dans cette maison. Nous crierons à toi du fond de notre détresse, et tu nous écouteras et nous sauveras !’10 Voici maintenant les Ammonites et les Moabites ainsi que les habitants de la région montagneuse de Séir. Tu n'as pas permis aux Israélites de pénétrer sur leur territoire quand ils venaient d'Egypte et, en effet, ils ont fait un détour et ne les ont pas détruits.11 Les voici qui nous récompensent en venant nous chasser de ton héritage, celui que tu nous as donné !12 Notre Dieu, ne vas-tu pas les juger ? En effet, nous sommes sans force devant cette foule nombreuse qui vient nous attaquer et nous ne savons que faire, mais nos yeux sont sur toi. »13 Tous les Judéens se tenaient debout devant l'Eternel, y compris leurs jeunes enfants, leurs femmes et leurs fils.Le Seigneur donne la victoire aux Judéens
14 Alors l'Esprit de l'Eternel reposa, au milieu de l'assemblée, sur Jachaziel, fils de Zacharie et descendant de Benaja, Jeïel et Matthania. C’était un Lévite, un descendant d'Asaph.15 Jachaziel dit : « Soyez attentifs, vous tous, Judéens et habitants de Jérusalem, et toi, roi Josaphat ! Voici ce que vous dit l'Eternel : ‘N’ayez pas peur et ne vous laissez pas effrayer devant cette foule nombreuse, car ce ne sera pas vous qui combattrez, ce sera Dieu.16 Demain, descendez contre eux. Ils vont monter par la colline de Tsits et vous les rencontrerez à l'extrémité de la vallée, en face du désert de Jeruel.17 Vous n'aurez pas à mener ce combat. Prenez position, tenez-vous là et vous verrez la délivrance que l'Eternel vous accordera.’Juda et Jérusalem, n’ayez pas peur et ne vous laissez pas effrayer ! Demain, sortez à leur rencontre et l'Eternel sera avec vous. »18 Josaphat s'inclina, le visage contre terre, et tous les Judéens et les habitants de Jérusalem tombèrent devant l'Eternel pour l'adorer.19 Les Lévites qui faisaient partie des Kehathites et des Koréites se levèrent pour louer d'une voix très forte l'Eternel, le Dieu d'Israël.20 Le lendemain, ils se levèrent tôt et partirent pour le désert de Tekoa. Au moment de leur départ, Josaphat se tint debout et dit : « Ecoutez-moi, Judéens et habitants de Jérusalem ! Ayez confiance en l'Eternel, votre Dieu, et vous serez affermis. Ayez confiance en ses prophètes et vous réussirez. »21 Puis, en accord avec le peuple, il désigna des musiciens qui, couverts d'ornements sacrés, célébraient l'Eternel tout en marchant devant l’armée et disaient : « Louez l'Eternel ! Oui, sa bonté dure éternellement ! »22 Au moment où l'on commençait les chants et les louanges, l'Eternel plaça une embuscade contre les Ammonites, les Moabites et les habitants de la région montagneuse de Séir qui étaient venus contre Juda, et ils furent battus.23 Les Ammonites et les Moabites se dressèrent contre les habitants de la région montagneuse de Séir pour les vouer à la destruction et les exterminer ; et, quand ils en eurent fini avec les habitants de Séir, ils s'aidèrent mutuellement à se détruire.24 Lorsque les Judéens furent arrivés à un point de vue donnant sur le désert, ils regardèrent du côté de la foule et constatèrent que ce n’était plus que cadavres tombés à terre. Il n’y avait aucun rescapé.25 Josaphat et son peuple allèrent piller leurs dépouilles ; ils trouvèrent en abondance parmi eux des richesses, des habits et des objets précieux et ils en ramassèrent tant qu'ils ne purent tout emporter. Ils mirent 3 jours pour procéder au pillage du butin, car il était considérable.26 Le quatrième jour, ils se rassemblèrent dans la vallée de Beraca. Ils y bénirent l'Eternel, c'est pourquoi ils appelèrent cet endroit vallée de Beraca, nom qui lui est resté jusqu'à aujourd’hui.27 Tous les hommes de Juda et de Jérusalem, avec Josaphat à leur tête, repartirent joyeux à Jérusalem, car l'Eternel les avait remplis de joie en les délivrant de leurs ennemis.28 Ils entrèrent à Jérusalem et dans la maison de l'Eternel au son des luths, des harpes et des trompettes.29 La terreur de Dieu s'empara de tous les royaumes des autres pays lorsqu'ils apprirent que l'Eternel avait combattu contre les ennemis d'Israël.30 Ainsi, le royaume de Josaphat fut tranquille et son Dieu lui donna du repos de tous les côtés.Fin du règne de Josaphat
31 Josaphat régna sur Juda. Il avait 35 ans lorsqu'il devint roi et il régna 25 ans à Jérusalem. Sa mère s'appelait Azuba et c’était la fille de Shilchi.32 Il marcha sur la voie de son père Asa. Il ne s'en écarta pas, faisant ce qui est droit aux yeux de l'Eternel.33 Toutefois, les hauts lieux ne disparurent pas et le peuple n'avait pas encore le cœur fermement attaché au Dieu de ses ancêtres.34 Le reste des actes de Josaphat, des premiers aux derniers, est décrit dans les mémoires de Jéhu, fils de Hanani, qui sont insérés dans les annales des rois d'Israël.35 Après cela, Josaphat, roi de Juda, s'associa avec le roi d'Israël, Achazia, qui avait une conduite coupable.36 Il s'associa avec lui pour construire des bateaux long-courriers et ils firent ces bateaux à Etsjon-Guéber.37 Alors Eliézer, fils de Dodava, de Marésha, prophétisa contre Josaphat en disant : « Parce que tu t'es associé avec Achazia, l'Eternel détruit ce que tu as fait. » Les bateaux furent brisés et ne purent atteindre leur lointaine destination. -
