Aimables paroles, par lesquelles l'apôtre veut adoucir l'impression de celles qui précèdent. Qu'importe qu'il ait accepté ou non ce qu'il avait le droit d'attendre d'eux et qu'il soit maintenant encore résolu de ne point leur être à charge ? Ce qu'il recherche, ce n'est pas leurs biens, mais eux-mêmes, le salut de leur âme.
Par la gracieuse comparaison qu'il emploie, Paul se représente comme le père spirituel de ses disciples de Corinthe ; (1Corinthiens 4.15) ils sont ses enfants ; or, pourquoi seraient-ils froissés de ce qu'il ne veut pas leur être à charge ? (verset 13)
Il suit en cela l'usage naturel, ce sont les parents qui amassent (Grec : "thésaurisent") pour leurs enfants ; non l'inverse. Touchante apologie de sa conduite !
- Du reste, il s'entend de soi-même que l'apôtre ne veut par là ni affranchir les enfants du devoir d'aider leurs parents si ceux-ci en ont besoin, (1Timothée 5.8) ni contredire les paroles du Sauveur sur la cupidité, dont le premier soin est de thésauriser, (Matthieu 6.19-21) ni nier le devoir des Eglises de subvenir aux besoins de leurs pasteurs.
