- Les veilles et les jeûnes (verset 5) servent de transition à l'indication des vertus qui ornent le ministère de Paul. Ces veilles lui étaient imposées par ses travaux, soit spirituels, soit manuels, car il pourvoyait par ces derniers à sa subsistance. (Actes 18.3 ; 20.34)
Par les jeûnes, on peut entendre ceux qu'il s'imposait volontairement, ou mieux encore, les privations dont il avait parfois à souffrir. (Philippiens 4.12)
- Parmi les vertus intérieures qui suivent, (verset 6) la connaissance signifie ici cette vue claire et pratique des hommes et des choses, qu'il appliquait à sa vie morale et à toute son œuvre. Si l'apôtre place l'Esprit-Saint dans cet ordre, c'est pour montrer que tous les autres dons en découlent comme de leur source, et que l'ensemble de ces grâces forme une vie, une vie spirituelle, dont l'âme est une charité sans hypocrisie. (verset 6)
La parole de vérité (verset 7) désigne la prédication de Paul et ce qui la caractérise, toute son action par la parole.
La puissance de Dieu, c'est cette force divine qui se manifestait, soit par la parole même, soit par des miracles.
Par les armes de la justice, de la droite et de la gauche, l'apôtre entend les armes offensives et défensives (glaive et bouclier ; comparez Ephésiens 6.11 et suivants) au moyen desquelles le chrétien combat pour la sainte cause de la justice.
L'honneur et l'ignominie, la bonne et la mauvaise réputation (verset 8) peuvent être également utiles ou nuisibles pour le chrétien, selon ses dispositions. Si, honoré, il emploie cette influence pour préparer les cœurs à recevoir l'Evangile ; si, chargé du mépris des incrédules, il en prend occasion de s'humilier lui-même et se console par la pensée que c'est un trait de ressemblance avec son Sauveur, toutes ces choses tourneront à son bien.
Ainsi les enfants de Dieu sont au milieu du monde une énigme, une perpétuelle contradiction pour ceux qui ne les comprennent pas et qui sont étrangers à leurs expériences : (versets 9,10) séducteurs qui, aux yeux de la sagesse et de la politique des hommes, répandent des principes faux et dangereux, et pourtant seuls pénétrés de la sainte vérité de Dieu ; inconnus (aussi méconnus), parce que l'homme naturel ne comprend rien aux choses qui sont de l'Esprit de Dieu, et pourtant connus de Dieu, devant qui leur cœur et leur vie sont à nu ; connus de leurs frères avec qui ils vivent dans une intime communion d'esprit.
Leurs dangers les exposent sans cesse à la mort, leurs souffrances et leurs renoncements sont une mort graduelle, - et pourtant une puissance de vie toujours nouvelle se manifeste en eux et par eux. (2Corinthiens 1.9,10 ; 4.10,11)
En tout cela ils reconnaissent qu'ils sont châtiés par le Seigneur pour leur sanctification, mais toujours son amour les relève et leur rend la vie. Au milieu de toutes ces tristesses du dedans et du dehors, une source intime de joie leur reste toujours ouverte dans la communion avec leur Dieu-Sauveur. Plus ils se sentent pauvres en eux-mêmes et privés des biens que le monde ambitionne, plus ils sont capables de répandre autour d'eux les richesses spirituelles de Christ. Ils n'ont rien qui leur soit propre, et ils savent que toutes choses sont à eux, parce qu'ils sont les héritiers de Celui à qui tout appartient. (verset 10 ; comparez 1Corinthiens 3.1-23)
La vie chrétienne est tout entière, comme la croix de Jésus-Christ, une folie pleine de la sagesse de Dieu, un opprobre qui cache la gloire éternelle !
