Chapitre 9.

La collecte pour les chrétiens de Jérusalem

Nouveaux motifs en faveur d'une abondante collecte.

Et pourtant il en écrit durant ces deux chapitres !

Pour expliquer cette apparente contradiction, il n'est pas nécessaire de suppléer : écrire plus au long, comme le fait Ostervald, ni de supposer avec Gerlach, Reuss, etc., que l'apôtre a été interrompu à la fin de 2Corinthiens 8, et qu'il reprend ici son sujet à nouveau.

Il n'est pas probable que Paul ait voulu dire : "Relativement à la collecte (Grec :"au service") même, à la manière de la faire, à ce qu'elle doit produire, etc., il est inutile de vous en écrire, car..." (verset 2)

Il est plus naturel d'admettre qu'il use d'un détour plein de délicatesse pour revenir au sujet de la collecte déjà traité précédemment. Il n'a l'air de s'attacher d'abord qu'à l'ambassade dont il vient de parler fin 2Corinthiens 7.

Le car par lequel commence notre chapitre le rattache au chapitre précédent. "Car à vrai dire il m'est superflu de vous écrire au sujet de la collecte...Mais (verset 3) j'ai pourtant jugé bon de vous envoyer les frères..."

Quand nous désirons voir les autres accomplir le bien, nous devons agir avec circonspection et tendresse envers eux, tout en leur donnant le temps nécessaire.

Les chrétiens doivent bien considérer l’engagement spirituel dans lequel ils se sont engagés, et s'efforcer de respecter en tous points la doctrine de la Parole de Dieu, leur Sauveur. Le devoir du ministère envers les saints est si simple qu'il ne semblerait y avoir aucun besoin d'exhorter les chrétiens à ce sujet ; cependant l'amour de soi-même, combat avec tant de force l'amour de Christ, qu'il est souvent nécessaire de stimuler les âmes, quant à la libéralité, par exemple, à titre de rappel !
