World English Bible as also in all of his letters, speaking in them of these things. In those, there are some things that are hard to understand, which the ignorant and unsettled twist, as they also do to the other Scriptures, to their own destruction.

C'est-à-dire de la venue de Christ et de l'établissement final de son règne, puis aussi, comme l'admettent la plupart des interprètes, du devoir de la sanctification en vue du jugement. (verset 14) Paul, en effet, ramène sans cesse la pensée de ses lecteurs sur ces sujets. (Romains 8.18-25 ; 1Corinthiens 15.20-58 ; Ephésiens 1.17 et suivants, 1Thessaloniciens 4.13 et suivants ; 1Thessaloniciens 5.1 et suivants ; 2Thessaloniciens 2.1 et suivants)

Vous l'a écrit ne peut s'appliquer qu'à l'épître aux Ephésiens, si les destinataires de 2 Pierre doivent être cherchés en Asie Mineure, comme ceux de 1 Pierre.

Les mots : toutes les lettres (Sin., majuscules), ou, en retranchant l'article (B. A, C), toutes lettres, supposent que l'auteur en tout cas, peut-être aussi les lecteurs, connaissaient la plupart des épîtres de Paul.

Dans lesquelles lettres (Sin., B. A). C, majuscules texte reçu portent : dans lesquels sujets.

L'auteur a surtout en vue les passages des lettres de Paul qui traitent du retour de Christ et qui sont souvent, par la nature même du sujet, très difficiles à entendre ; par exemple, les passages 2Thessaloniciens 2.1 et suivants ; 1Corinthiens 15.29-34 ; comparez 2Timothée 2.17,18.

C'était à des passages pareils que s'attachaient souvent les hérétiques pour fonder leurs erreurs, en les tordant à leur propre perdition.

- Alors, comme aujourd'hui, ce sont bien les Ecritures dont peuvent ainsi abuser les hommes ignorants et mal affermis.

Par ce mot d'Ecritures, l'auteur n'entend pas exclusivement les Ecritures de l'Ancien Testament. Il considère les épîtres de Paul comme faisant partie des Ecritures, puisqu'il reproche aux ignorants de les tordre comme les autres Ecritures. Il s'agit donc de livres chrétiens lus dans les assemblées et revêtus d'autorité, dont les hérétiques avaient intérêt à tordre le sens.

Aussi est-il moins naturel de traduire : comme les autres écrits, qui traitent de l'avènement du Seigneur. Comparer cependant l'Introductionµ !
