Se rassemblèrent. Cette grande victoire de David n'arriva pas immédiatement après la fuite des Syriens, verset 14, car à cette époque David resta tranquille à Jérusalem (chapitre 11). C'est la mention de la fuite des Syriens qui amène par anticipation le récit de la guerre par laquelle ils devinrent plus tard sujets et tributaires de David.

Ce texte décrit une nouvelle tentative de guerre, des Syriens contre Israël. Les prétextes les plus vils pour engendrer les conflits, finissent toujours par ressurgir, même s'ils sont réactivés par des motifs insignifiants ; il en est ainsi des ennemis de Christ, le « Fils de David ». Mais maintenant, prenait corps la promesse faite à Abraham, dans Ge 15:18, et répétée à Josué, dans Jos 1:4, promesse stipulant que les frontières d'Israël devaient s'étendre jusqu'à l'Euphrate. Il nous faut apprendre par conséquent, qu'il est dangereux d'aider ceux qui luttent contre Dieu, car quand ces derniers chutent, leurs associés les accompagnent inexorablement.
