David, conscient du meurtre d'Urie et de tant d'autres braves d'Israël qui ont péri avec lui, accepte ces injures comme méritées. La voix de sa conscience lui dit que devant Dieu ce terme : homme de sang, n'est pas trop fort. C'est par cette humilité profonde que, malgré la gravité de ses fautes, David a pu être encore l'homme selon le cœur de Dieu.

Qu'ai-je à, faire avec vous ? Littéralement : Qu'y a-t-il [de commun] entre moi et vous ? David s'adresse à Joab et à Abisaï, quand même celui-ci seul a parlé. Il veut caractériser par là la différence de sentiments entre eux et lui, et repousser leur ingérence dans un domaine où il n'a d'autre juge que sa conscience.
