Ce conseil avait une portée politique. D'un côté, c'était une prise de possession publique de la souveraineté (1Rois 2.22) ; de l'autre, il y avait là un outrage sanglant qui rendait toute réconciliation impossible entre le fils et le père. Ahithophel ne se doutait pas que, par ce conseil d'une prudence tout humaine, il travaillait à l'accomplissement de la menace faite jadis à David par Nathan (12.11).
