Tous les hommes de Juda répondirent aux hommes d’Israël : C’est que le roi nous est proche ; et qu’y a-t-il là pour enflammer votre colère ? Avons- nous vécu aux dépens du roi ? Nous a-t-il fait des présents ?

Segond 1910 Et les hommes d'Israël répondirent aux hommes de Juda : Le roi nous appartient dix fois autant, et David même plus qu'à vous. Pourquoi nous avez-vous méprisés ? N'avons-nous pas été les premiers à proposer de faire revenir notre roi ? Et les hommes de Juda parlèrent avec plus de violence que les hommes d'Israël.

World English Bible The men of Israel answered the men of Judah, and said, "We have ten parts in the king, and we have also more claim to David than you. Why then did you despise us, that our advice should not be first had in bringing back our king?" The words of the men of Judah were fiercer than the words of the men of Israel.

Nous avons dix parts au roi. Comme étant dix sur douze, nous tenons au roi par dix liens, et non pas seulement pas deux (Juda et Siméon).

Et même... : David nous appartient donc non seulement autant, mais même plus qu'à vous.

Cette injure : celle de ne pas nous avoir attendus.

N'ai-je pas été le premier... ? C'est sans doute une allusion aux pourparlers mentionnés verset 10 et dont David avait profité pour réveiller le zèle de Juda (versets 11 et 12).

Parlèrent plus haut : eurent le dernier mot dans cette contestation ; mais le mécontentement des gens d'Israël, refoulé au premier moment éclata bientôt dans la nouvelle révolte, racontée au chapitre 20.
