Le terme de forteresse désigne les hauteurs d'alentour, d'où il dominait toute la contrée. Cette localité était à quelques lieues de la vallée des Réphaïm, à l'ouest de Jérusalem ; et non loin du camp de l'ennemi devait se trouver le puits qui est indiqué ici comme étant à la porte de Bethléem. Ritter identifie ce puits avec une belle citerne de six mètres de profondeur, dans le voisinage de laquelle la tradition place la maison d'Isaï. Comme cette source était à un kilomètre à l'ouest de Bethléem, il fallait, pour y arriver, traverser les postes des Philistins.
