C'est lui qui bâtira. La maison de l'Eternel était le symbole du repos de Dieu sur la terre et de celui de la terre en Dieu. Elle devait être bâtie dans un temps de paix et non au milieu d'agitations et de guerres continuelles, comme fut le règne de David. Ce motif n'est pas allégué ici par Nathan, mais il est développé à plusieurs reprises par David lui-même dans le premier livre des Chroniques (1Chroniques 22.8 ; 28.3), et comme une déclaration qui lui a été faite par l'Eternel, sans que nous sachions si ce fut directement ou bien par l'intermédiaire de Nathan ou de quelque autre prophète. Comparez 1Chroniques 22.9 : Un fils va te naître, qui sera un homme de paix.

Pour toujours. Ce mot implique l'application de cette promesse à la postérité de Salomon, y compris le Messie dont le règne est seul éternel (comparez verset 16 et Luc 1.32-33).
