To this end we also pray always for you, that our God may count you worthy of your calling, and fulfill every desire of goodness and work of faith, with power;

C'est en vue de cela aussi, afin que, par votre foi, vous ayez part à cette gloire future, (verset 10) que je prie continuellement pour vous.

Comment l'apôtre peut-il prier "afin que Dieu les juge dignes de la vocation," quand cette vocation est un fait accompli ? (1Thessaloniciens 5.24 ; comparez verset 10) Pour échapper à cette difficulté plusieurs ont traduit : "vous rende dignes ;" mais le verbe grec n'a jamais ce sens. Il faut admettre que "vocation" signifie : "le but de la vocation," la gloire céleste comme Colossiens 1.5 "l'espérance" désigne "l'objet espéré" la vie éternelle.

Grec : "et qu'il accomplisse toute bienveillance de bonté, et l'œuvre de foi, avec puissance." Ce dernier mot invoque la puissance de Dieu pour accomplir ce que Paul demande. Quant à ces termes : toute bienveillance de bonté, ils peuvent indiquer la bienveillance et la bonté de Dieu, ou une vertu chrétienne dont l'apôtre souhaite que ses lecteurs soient remplis. Dans ce cas, il faut entendre une bienveillance, un amour pour tout ce qui est bon. Ce dernier sens paraît plus en harmonie avec le second objet de la prière de Paul : l'œuvre de la foi. Notre conviction et notre attente de la seconde venue de Christ doivent nous amener à prier davantage, pour nous-mêmes comme pour les autres.

S'il réside quelque chose de bon en nous-même, cela ne peut provenir que du bon plaisir et de la bonté de Dieu : cela s'appelle la Grâce !

Il existe de nombreux desseins divins relatifs à la Grâce, conformément à la Volonté de Dieu envers Son peuple ; l'apôtre Paul prie pour que Dieu accomplisse puissamment dans le cœur des Thessaloniciens l’œuvre de la foi.

La Puissance divine ne fait pas qu’initier la foi, elle agit sur les œuvres qui en découlent. Tels sont le grand but et le dessein de la Grâce de notre Dieu et du Seigneur Jésus-Christ, qui s'est fait connaître à nous, et qui œuvre en notre cœur !
