Grec : "Lesquels subiront la peine, une destruction éternelle."

Le mot que nous traduisons ici par perdition ou destruction ne se retrouve que dans les passages suivants : 1Corinthiens 5.5 ; 1Thessaloniciens 5.3 ; 1Timothée 6.9, toujours dans des associations d'idées qui indiquent, non seulement une ruine éternelle (comme ici), irrévocable, mais peut-être la cessation de l'existence. Aussi l'étymologie de ce mot est-elle un verbe qui signifie faire périr !

La préposition grecque que nous traduisons par loin de a aussi le sens de par ; dans ce dernier cas l'apôtre voudrait dire que les réprouvés subiront leur peine par la présence du Seigneur, par la gloire de sa force, en tant que cette redoutable présence suffira pour les plonger dans la ruine et fera leur désespoir.

Si l'on adopte le premier sens, sa pensée serait qu'ils subiront cette peine, cette ruine loin de la face du Seigneur, qu'ils seront à jamais privés de sa présence, et qu'en cela même consistera leur châtiment.

La gloire de sa force est cette puissance vivifiante, agent de notre transformation, (Philippiens 3.21) dont nous ne pouvons être éloignés sans mourir.
