- Ce souvenir de la foi dont avaient été animées la mère et l'aïeule de Timothée, est provoqué par le même sentiment qui portait Paul à parler de ses ancêtres : (2Timothée 1.3) c'est une profonde reconnaissance pour les grâces de Dieu déjà répandues sur ces familles de pieux Israélites, et qui n'avaient été que les arrhes de grâces plus grandes encore. En effet, Timothée ayant été converti à l'Evangile dès sa jeunesse, il est probable que ces membres de sa famille l'avaient été aussi avec lui.
Tous ces précieux souvenirs que l'apôtre aime à rappeler, sont l'objet de ses actions de grâce, (2Timothée 1.3) et en même temps un motif puissant de l'exhortation qui va suivre. (2Timothée 1.6 et suivants)
