Chapitre 4.

1 à 5 Timothée doit remplir fidèlement son ministère.

C'est ainsi que nous traduisons d'après une variante qui a pour elle la plupart des autorités et est admise par les critiques les plus éminents.

Le texte reçu porte : "selon son apparition et son règne," c'est-à-dire quand il apparaîtra dans son règne. Quoi qu'il en soit, la pensée du retour de Christ et de son règne glorieux, ainsi appelée en témoignage, avec celle du jugement des vivants et des morts, devait ajouter un grand poids à la solennelle adjuration que l'apôtre prononce, en y faisant intervenir le nom de Dieu et de Jésus-Christ. 2Timothée 4.2 indique l'objet de cette adjuration.

L'apôtre Paul recommande solennellement à Timothée de s’appliquer, dans l’exercice de son ministère, bien que beaucoup, dit-il, ne supporteront pas la saine doctrine. (2 Timothée 4:1-5) Il renforce cette recommandation, à l’approche de son propre martyre. (2 Timothée 4:6-8) Paul désire que Timothée vienne le voir rapidement. (2 Timothée 4:9-13) Paul avertit ceux qui l'ont abandonné ; il exprime sa foi, quant à son départ vers le royaume céleste. (2 Timothée 4:14-18) Salutations amicales et bénédiction habituelle. (2 Timothée 4:19-22)

2 Timothée 4:1-5 Il viendra un temps où les hommes se détourneront de la Vérité : ils se lasseront d’entendre l’Évangile de Christ, en se tournant avec plaisir vers les « fables » du monde.

Ces personnes prendront de telles voies, qu’elles ne supporteront plus toute prédication qui puisse les déranger.

Ceux qui éprouvent de la compassion pour les âmes doivent toujours rester très vigilants, ils doivent supporter toutes les douloureuses épreuves inhérentes à leur fidélité, et saisir toutes les occasions de faire connaître l’Évangile !
