Paul a conscience de n'avoir rien caché, rien soustrait de tout ce qui est utile au salut des âmes, mais de l'avoir prêché, enseigné, non seulement en public, dans les assemblées des chrétiens, mais de maison en maison, et tant aux Juifs qu'aux Grecs.

Or, ce qui est utile avant tout, Paul le résume en ces deux mots : la repentance et la foi.

La repentance, point de départ d'une complète transformation morale de l'homme, (comparez Matthieu 3.2, note) et dont l'objet est Dieu (envers Dieu), non seulement en tant qu'elle ramène l'âme à Dieu, comme on l'entend d'ordinaire, mais parce que le sentiment du péché n'est vrai, sincère, fertile en bons fruits, que si on l'éprouve avec douleur devant Dieu. (Psaumes 51.6 ; Luc 15.21)

Avec la repentance, Paul annonçait la foi au Sauveur, moyen du pardon, de la paix et d'une vie nouvelle.

Voilà ce dont il rendait témoignage aussi bien par sa vie que par sa parole.
