Deux fois (versets 22,25) l'apôtre exhorte ces hommes désespérés à prendre courage.

Mais pour cela il fallait qu'il pût prononcer le grand nom de Dieu au milieu de cette scène, où une nature hostile menaçait la vie de tous.

Pauvre prisonnier, il ose proférer ces mots : Aucun de nous ne perdra la vie ! Il en a reçu l'assurance par un messager de ce Dieu auquel il appartient tout entier et qu'il sert (grec auquel il rend un culte ; Romains 1.9 note).

Il faut que lui-même atteigne le but du voyage, Rome, où il doit glorifier son Maître, en comparaissant devant César.

Reste la plus extraordinaire de toutes ses paroles ; sans aucun doute, le fidèle serviteur de Dieu avait prié pour la délivrance de ses compagnons de voyage ; or voici, a dit le messager céleste, Dieu te les a tous donnés (grec donnés par grâce).

Les deux cent soixante-seize hommes (verset 37) qui se trouvaient avec Paul sur ce vaisseau furent sauvés pour l'amour de lui, comme Sodome et Gomorrhe l'eussent été pour l'amour de dix justes.

"Plus facilement beaucoup de méchants seront sauvés avec un petit nombre d'hommes pieux, qu'un seul homme pieux ne périra avec beaucoup de coupables. Le monde est semblable à ce navire." Bengel.
