1 et 2 Un préambule, sous forme de complainte, sur la chute imminente et certaine d'Israël.

C'est une complainte. Le mot employé ici est le terme technique pour désigner les chants de deuil (comparez le titre du livre des Lamentations de Jérémie et 2Samuel 1.17). La ruine est si certaine qu'Amos fait entendre d'avance le chant funèbre.

La Parole de Dieu, convaincante et pleine d'avertissements, doit être gardée dans le cœur et mise en pratique car elle est véritablement la Parole du réconfort et de la paix ; si nous prenons au sérieux Son enseignement, Elle pourra alors produire tout Son effet. Le Seigneur est toujours plein de miséricorde envers les hommes, mais ceux-ci comptent toujours sur leurs propres forces pour les délivrer de l'épreuve, ce qui, finalement, les condamne encore davantage.

Plus ils refusent de s'approcher de Christ pour profiter de Sa grâce vivifiante, plus la colère divine les guette. Les hommes font leurs idoles des choses du monde, mais finalement, ils verront que celles-ci sont incapables de les protéger.
