Les enfers et la mer représentent les lieux les plus profonds et ont pour pendants les cieux et le Carmel, représentant ce qu'il y a de plus élevé soit en général dans l'univers, soit plus spécialement sur la terre ; comparez Psaumes 139.7-10. Même idée, sous d'autres images, versets 18 et 19.
