La femme et le dragon.

Chapitre 12.

1 à 12 L'enfant de la femme arraché au dragon, qui est vaincu avec ses anges.

Le ciel venait de se rouvrir aux yeux de Jean avec son temple, (Apocalypse 11.19) et c'est dans le ciel que se déroule la vision suivante. L'auteur relève spécialement le caractère symbolique de l'apparition qu'il va décrire en l'appelant un grand signe, mot qui ne se retrouve, dans cette acception, qu'à verset 3 et Apocalypse 15.1. Comparer Apocalypse 9.16,17.

Il faut probablement se représenter la femme comme apparaissant dans le soleil, qui lui fait une gigantesque auréole. L'idée est que la femme (voir à la note de verset 5, ce qu'elle figure) resplendit de toute la lumière céleste représentée par les astres qui éclairent le jour et la nuit. (Genèse 1.16)

L'Église, est vue dans ce texte, par l'apôtre, sous forme de vision : elle est représentée dans le ciel par l'emblème d'une femme, mère des croyants. Elle est revêtue du soleil, justifiée, sanctifiée, brillant par son union avec Christ, le « Soleil de Droiture ». La lune est sous ses pieds ; son rayonnement est supérieur à la lumière réfléchie par le visage de Moïse, alors qu’il redescendait du Mont Sinaï.

Elle porte sur sa tête, une couronne de douze étoiles ; la doctrine de l'Évangile, prêchée par les douze apôtres, est une couronne de gloire, pour tous les véritables croyants.

Cette femme est dans les douleurs de l'enfantement, attendant une sainte descendance ; elle est désireuse de voir la fin de la condamnation des pécheurs, par leur conversion.

Le dragon est l’emblème bien connu de Satan et de ses principaux représentants sur terre ; (à l’époque de rédaction de l’Apocalypse, l'empire païen de Rome était bâti sur sept collines). Ce dragon avait dix cornes, représentant dix royaumes. Les sept diadèmes représentent sept formes de gouvernement. Le dragon entraînait avec sa queue le tiers des étoiles du ciel, les jetant à terre ; ceci représente la persécution et la séduction des serviteurs de Dieu, de ceux qui enseignent la Parole.

Ce dragon cherchait à écraser la religion chrétienne ; malgré l'opposition de ses ennemis, l'Église a assuré une descendance active de serviteurs véritables et fidèles, enseignant la Parole, et étant renouvelés en Christ ; ce Dernier, le Fils de Dieu, doit gouverner les nations, les Siens étant amenés à « participer » à Sa Gloire. Cette « progéniture » bénie allait être protégée par Dieu !
