L'ange des eaux est, suivant plusieurs interprètes, celui-là même qui venait d'exercer les jugements de Dieu sur les eaux ; (verset 4) suivant d'autres, c'est une sorte d'ange tutélaire des eaux. La même conception se retrouverait dans l'ange "qui a pouvoir sur le feu," (Apocalypse 14.18) et dans les quatre anges "qui retiennent les quatre vents de la terre." (Apocalypse 7.2)

L'ange célèbre la justice divine, qui s'est manifestée dans les jugements des trois premières coupes. Les paroles de louange de versets 5-7 forment un intermède, comme celui de Apocalypse 8.13, et montrent que les trois premières coupes, de même que les trois premières épîtres, constituent un groupe à part.

Les jugements que les anges admirent et célèbrent peuvent sembler sévères aux hommes pécheurs. Mais la justice doit triompher ; et l'histoire du monde offre déjà des exemples frappants de l'application de cette loi du talion.

Le sang répandu est puni par l'effusion du sang. (Matthieu 26.52) Tout péché trouve son châtiment dans ses fruits amers. Telle est l'immuable justice de Dieu, qui, pour ceux qui croient en lui, est, aussi bien que sa miséricorde, l'objet de leur adoration. (Apocalypse 15.3 ; 19.2 ; Psaumes 19.10)
