Tout dans l'apparition de cet ange, qui descend du ciel et qui a une grande puissance, dénote un ange d'un ordre supérieur. En lui resplendît la sainteté et la majesté de Dieu : toute la terre fut illuminée de sa gloire. (Comparer Ezéchiel 43.2)

Ainsi tous les habitants de la terre furent rendus attentifs à son apparition, et ils entendirent tous la nouvelle que l'ange cria d'une voir forte. La chute de Babylone avait déjà été publiée à Apocalypse 14.8. (Comparer Esaïe 21.9) Son sort est dépeint dans des termes semblables à ceux dans lesquels les prophètes avaient annoncé la ruine de la Babylone des bords de l'Euphrate. (Esaïe 13.19-22 ; 34.11-14 ; Jérémie 50.39)

Elle est devenue une habitation de démons (c'est ainsi que les Septante traduisent le mot : "boucs," dans Esaïe 13.21), une prison de tout esprit impur, car c'est contre son gré que l'esprit impur séjourne dans les lieux déserts. (Comparer Matthieu 12.43)
