Apocalypse 2.9

Affliction, pauvreté, quant aux biens de la terre, mais richesse en biens spirituels, (Matthieu 6.20 ; Luc 12.21 ; 1Corinthiens 1.5 ; 2Corinthiens 6.10 ; 8.9) tel est l'état de l'Église de Smyrne. L'affliction peut s'entendre de la persécution ; (verset 10) celle ci peut avoir été cause de la pauvreté des chrétiens de Smyrne, car les persécutés étaient dépouillés de leurs biens. (Hébreux 10.34) Pauvres, ils étaient sans défense contre les calomnies, Mais cette relation entre les trois épreuves n'est pas certaine.

- Les mots : tes œuvres ajoutés ici et à verset 13 après : je connais, ne sont pas authentiques. On le comprend, puisqu'à l'égard de ces deux Eglises le Seigneur a moins à parler d'œuvres que de souffrances et de tentations.

Ces Juifs se glorifiaient du nom de Juifs, (Romains 2.17) bien qu'ils n'y eussent plus aucun droit, (Romains 2.29) parce que leur incrédulité et leur haine de la vérité les rendaient serviteurs de Satan plutôt que du Dieu vivant (Apocalypse 2.24 ; 3.9 ; Jean 8.44 ; Actes 13.10)

La qualification de synagogue de Satan faisait contraste avec leur prétention d'être "l'assemblée de l'Eternel." (Nombres 16.3 ; 20.4) Les Juifs prirent une part active dans les premières persécutions contre les chrétiens. (Actes 13.45 ; 18.6) On sait, entre autres, qu'ils contribuèrent à la mort sanglante de Polycarpe, évêque de Smyrne.

Les calomnies de ces Juifs n'étaient pas relatives aux agapes des chrétiens et à la célébration de la cène. Elles consistaient plutôt à les dénoncer aux autorités païennes comme rebelles à César. (Luc 23.2 ; Actes 17.7)
