Le premier être vivant ressemble à un lion, le deuxième à un taureau, le troisième a le visage d'un homme et le quatrième ressemble à un aigle en plein vol.

Comparer les quatre êtres vivants de la vision d'Ezechiel Ezéchiel 1.5 et suivants

Ezéchiel réunit dans chacun des quatre les traits des quatre animaux. Dans la description de Jean, chacun ressemble à l'un de ces animaux. De plus, ils ont, non pas quatre, mais six ailes, comme les séraphins d'Esaïe. (Esaïe 6.2) Ces êtres vivants, au nombre de quatre, représentent la création animée dans sa totalité. Les versets qui suivent, et surtout Apocalypse 5 (comparez encore Apocalypse 7.11 ; 15.7), disent clairement quel est le sens profond de ce symbole.

Toute la création rendue à sa destination par la rédemption, et revenue à une sainte et sublime unité avec l'humanité sauvée, loue le Créateur. De toutes parts elle contemple et réfléchit la lumière divine, la gloire de Dieu, idée représentée ici et dans Ezechiel (Ezéchiel 10.12) par ces yeux sans nombre qui couvrent devant et derrière les êtres vivants.

- Un rapprochement entre cette vision et les passages de l'Ancien Testament où il est parlé des chérubins, montre qu'au fond l'idée est la même. (Genèse 3.24 ; Exode 25.17 et suivants ; comparez Hébreux 9.5 note.)
