C'est ici l'une de ces paroles énigmatiques, comme 1.6, qui mettent en quelque sorte aux abois les interprètes. C'est en tout cas un fragment de chanson populaire que s'approprie Sulammith pour répondre à la demande de son bien-aimé.

Dans son application primitive, on se demande si elle doit être prise au sens propre, comme un ordre à des jeunes filles de veiller à la garde des vignes, en ce moment où elles sont exposées à des déprédations causées par les jeunes renards, ou s'il faut, comme l'ont entendu plusieurs, y voir une invitation figurée à ceux qui ont à surveiller les jeunes filles pour les mettre en garde contre leurs galants. A notre point de vue (voir l'introduction), les vignes dont parle Sulammith figurent, comme 8.12, la terre de Canaan, et les déprédations des renards sont l'emblème des razzias que ne cessaient de faire en Canaan les peuples voisins, particulièrement les Philistins et les Syriens. L'obligation imposée à Sulammith de garder les vignes représenterait le service militaire auquel Israël était soumis depuis l'établisssement de la royauté pour réprimer ces agressions.
