Colossiens 2.2

Ou "exhortés," affermis. Le mot grec signifie également : consoler et exhorter. (1Thessaloniciens 3.2 ; 2Thessaloniciens 2.17)

L'objet des combats intérieurs (verset 1) et des prières de l'apôtre était donc que les chrétiens fussent affermis dans la foi, étroitement unis dans l'amour, et toujours plus enrichis d'une pleine certitude.

Ces trois grâces de Dieu, qui embrassent toutes les facultés de l'homme pour les sanctifier, se développent parallèlement dans la communion avec le Sauveur ; mais aussi l'erreur a toujours l'effet directement opposé : elle ébranle la foi, désunit les chrétiens et appauvrit l'intelligence. De là les craintes et les ardentes prières de Paul.

- Ces mots d'une surabondante énergie : toute la richesse d'une pleine certitude d'intelligence, expriment admirablement la plénitude de la vérité divine, reçue, comprise, à la fois par l'intelligence et par l'expérience vivante du cœur. (verset 3, note.)

Le grand objet de la connaissance ou de l'intelligence chrétienne, c'est le mystère de la rédemption que Paul annonçait. (Colossiens 1.26,27 ; 4.3 ; comparez Ephésiens 1.9 ; 3.4,9 ; 6.19, note ; 1Timothée 3.16, note.)

D'après le texte reçu, ce mystère serait désigné comme mystère du Dieu et Père et de Christ, marquant le rapport mutuel et la participation simultanée du Père et du Fils dans l'œuvre de la rédemption.

Mais on trouve encore dans les divers manuscrits les plus importants les variantes qui suivent : de Dieu et de Christ ; de Dieu Père de Christ, de Dieu qui est Christ, de Dieu Christ, et enfin simplement de Dieu.

Les critiques se sont tour à tour décidés pour l'une ou l'autre de ces leçons, mais sans que les raisons d'aucun d'eux soient parfaitement concluantes, ce qui, du reste, importe assez peu pour la pensée de l'apôtre. (Voir la note suivante.)
