Les manuscrits de la plus grande autorité portent : la paix de Christ, tandis que le texte reçu dit : la paix de Dieu. La paix de Christ est celle que Christ donne, par sa grâce, au croyant. Lui-même est "notre paix." (Ephésiens 2.14 ; comparez surtout Jean 14.27 "Je vous donne ma paix.") Aussi la pensée de l'apôtre prend-elle la forme d'un vœu qui interrompt l'exhortation.

Les chrétiens sont appelés à la paix de Christ ; mais ils y sont appelés tous comme un seul corps ; (1Corinthiens 12.12 et suivants) de sorte que leur communion mutuelle est un motif et un moyen de rechercher cette paix, de la faire régner dans leur cœur et dans leurs rapports réciproques.

- Le mot que nous rendons par régner désigne la fonction de celui qui avait à décider des prix de la course et à les adjuger, comme Colossiens 2.18. La paix doit dominer au sein de toutes les luttes intérieures, aussi bien que des compétitions diverses qui peuvent s'élever entre des frères, membres du même corps. (1Corinthiens 7.15)

Cette exhortation à la reconnaissance est, à la fois, un moyen puissant de conserver et d'augmenter en nous la paix de Christ, et une transition à versets 16,17, où l'apôtre insiste sur ce devoir, et indique comment la reconnaissance doit s'exprimer.
