Ce qui les poussait à ce dessein était moins le soin de vivre dans l'abstinence que celui d'éviter tout ce qui touchait à l'idolâtrie. C'est un acte de conscience et de fidélité, motivé par l'habitude qu'avaient les païens d'imprimer aux repas un cachet religieux en offrant aux dieux une portion de la viande et du vin servis sur leurs tables (les légumes n'étaient pas consacrés). Nous voyons encore les Grecs et les Romains commencer le repas par une libation de vin. Accepter une nourriture ainsi consacrée aux idoles, c'était se rendre indirectement coupable d'idolâtrie. Comparez 1Corinthiens 10.20.

Il faut reconnaître que les bonnes choses que nous croyons acquérir par nous-même proviennent, en fait, de Dieu. Daniel, en cette période de captivité, était toujours fidèle à sa religion. Quel que soit le nom qui lui fut donné, il a toujours conservé son esprit Israélite. Les jeunes de son entourage, dans ce contexte de luxe et de péché, n'avaient aucun scrupule à consommer la viande qu'on leur donnait. Quand le peuple de Dieu était à Babylone, il devait prendre garde de ne pas participer à la vie de péché qui l'entourait.

Il est élogieux pour des jeunes, de ne pas convoiter ni rechercher les plaisirs des sens. Ceux qui veulent exceller en sagesse et dans la piété, doivent apprendre en permanence à garder leur corps en bride.

Daniel a évité de se mêler au péché ; nous devons considérer ce dernier comme le pire problème susceptible de nous surprendre. Il est plus facile de garder la tentation à distance, plutôt que de lui résister quand elle est près de nous. Nous ne pouvons pas avoir de meilleure conduite, envers ceux en qui nous avons trouvé toute faveur, que de chercher à nous préserver du péché.

Le monde ne peut soupçonner l'avantage qu'on a, d'éviter tout excès, grâce à un régime approprié ; en cherchant à supprimer toute débauche, chacun contribue ainsi à garder sa bonne forme. Une modération scrupuleuse sera toujours bénéfique pour le bien-être de notre vie, à l'inverse de toute indulgence pour le péché.
