Alors l'Éternel dit à Moïse : Voici, le jour de ta mort approche ; appelle Josué, et présentez-vous dans le tabernacle d'assignation, afin que je lui donne mes ordres. Moïse et Josué allèrent donc, et se présentèrent dans le tabernacle d'assignation.

14 à 23 Installation de Josué.

Certaines particularités de style semblent indiquer que ce morceau n'est pas de la même main que le compte-rendu des discours. C'est une notice qui, ainsi que le récit de la mort de Moïse, a été ajoutée pour former la clôture du livre.

Tente d'assignation. Ce terme ne se retrouve pas ailleurs dans le Deutéronome ; il se trouve de nouveau Josué 18.1. Sur ce nom, voir Exode 33.7, note.

Je lui donnerai mes ordres : je l'établirai dans sa charge. Dieu veut confirmer maintenant, par un signe visible pour tous, l'installation que Moïse avait précédemment accomplie en son nom (3.21 ; Nombres 27.23).

Moïse et Josué se présentent à la porte du Tabernacle, afin de connaître ce que l'Éternel désirait leur communiquer. Il est à nouveau annoncé au patriarche, qu'il devait bientôt mourir.

Même ceux qui sont convaincus de quitter ce monde dans un avenir proche, ont souvent besoin qu'on leur rappelle cette étape à franchir. Dieu dit à Moïse, qu'après sa mort, l'Alliance qu'Il avait eu tant de peine à faire avec Israël, serait rompue : Le peuple abandonnerait l'Éternel, et réciproquement.

Dieu rejette en toute justice, ceux qui l'abandonnent. Il est ordonné à Moïse de donner au peuple un cantique, rappelant le danger qu'il y avait à négliger l'Alliance établie préalablement entre Dieu et Israël.

La Parole de Dieu discerne les pensées et les intentions du cœur, par le biais de reproches et de corrections. Les serviteurs de Dieu qui prêchent la Parole, ne soupçonnent pas toujours à quel point les hommes ont de l'imagination ! Le Seigneur, quant à Lui, connaît parfaitement toutes choses.
