Set two men, base fellows, before him, and let them testify against him, saying, 'You cursed God and the king!' Then carry him out, and stone him to death."

The men of his city, even the elders and the nobles who lived in his city, did as Jezebel had sent to them, according as it was written in the letters which she had sent to them.

The two men, the base fellows, came in and sat before him. The base fellows testified against him, even against Naboth, in the presence of the people, saying, "Naboth cursed God and the king!" Then they carried him out of the city, and stoned him to death with stones.

Then they sent to Jezebel, saying, "Naboth has been stoned, and is dead."

It happened, when Jezebel heard that Naboth was stoned, and was dead, that Jezebel said to Ahab, "Arise, take possession of the vineyard of Naboth the Jezreelite, which he refused to give you for money; for Naboth is not alive, but dead."

It happened, when Ahab heard that Naboth was dead, that Ahab rose up to go down to the vineyard of Naboth the Jezreelite, to take possession of it.

The word of Yahweh came to Elijah the Tishbite, saying,

"Arise, go down to meet Ahab king of Israel, who dwells in Samaria. Behold, he is in the vineyard of Naboth, where he has gone down to take possession of it.

Ahab said to Elijah, "Have you found me, my enemy?" He answered, "I have found you, because you have sold yourself to do that which is evil in the sight of Yahweh.

Behold, I will bring evil on you, and will utterly sweep you away and will cut off from Ahab everyone who urinates against a wall, and him who is shut up and him who is left at large in Israel.

But you have dishonored the poor man. Don't the rich oppress you, and personally drag you before the courts?
3.16 à 4.16 Troisième morceau
Dieu a fait toute chose belle en son temps et nous ne devons pas nous permettre de douter de la sagesse qui a présidé à l'élaboration du plan divin. Il n'en est pas moins vrai qu'il y a dans le monde des éléments fâcheux que Dieu laisse subsister et avec lesquels il faut compter. Il y a dans la société des désordres qui se font sentir d'une manière bien douloureuse. Ainsi :
1°) 16 à 22
Il y a injustice là même où, plus que partout ailleurs, devrait régner la justice (verset 16). Cette pénible constatation amène sans doute le fidèle à croire d'autant plus fermement au jugement final, au triomphe définitif de la justice (verset 17). Mais Dieu a un autre but encore en usant de patience : il veut éprouver les hommes (verset 18) et leur permettre, en quelque sorte, avec une apparence de raison, de se livrer an matérialisme. Il n'y a point de Dieu ! peuvent-ils s'écrier ; autrement il se produirait une intervention du ciel en faveur des opprimés. Point de vie à venir ! Point d'âme ni de principe immortel en l'homme (versets 19 à 21) ! Il ne lui reste, à ce point de vue, qu'à manger et à boire (verset 22).
Au siège du jugement. Si la justice était bannie du milieu des hommes, elle devrait du moins trouver un dernier refuge chez les juges, qui sont sur leur trône les représentants de Dieu (Psaumes 82.1). Mais souvent ils sanctionnent le mal et condamnent les innocents, ce qui est le comble de l'abomination. Voir Psaumes 58, note.
Iniquité..., iniquité. Iniquité partout !
Salomon semble souhaiter que les hommes puissent vraiment réaliser que le fait de vouer délibérément leur cœur aux attraits du monde, ne fait que les mettre au même niveau que les animaux, sans les libérer des souffrances présentes, ni des comptes à rendre dans l’au-delà.
Les hommes, comme les animaux, retournent à la poussière, d'où ils ont été tirés. Quelles piètres raisons avons-nous de tirer orgueil de notre corps, ou de ce que nous sommes capables d’accomplir physiquement ! Comme bien peu ne peuvent saisir cette pensée complètement, combien considèrent correctement la différence entre l'âme rationnelle de l'homme, et la vie de l’animal. L'esprit de l'homme monte aux cieux pour y être jugé : il est alors transformé dans un état immuable et éternel : celui de bonheur, ou de misère.
Il est également certain que l'esprit animal va redescendre en terre, où il périra définitivement. Le cas de ceux qui n’ont comme espérance finale, que la mort en ce monde, comme les animaux, est vraiment lamentable.
Posons-nous cette question : comment l’éternité peut-elle se passer dans la félicité ? La réponse nous est donnée par le grand dessein divin : c’est avec Jésus, qui est révélé en tant que Fils de Dieu, et l'Espérance des pécheurs.
