Ecclésiaste 7.14

Au jour du bonheur..., du malheur. Comparez 3.4. Il y a un temps pour tout et tout est bon en ce temps-là.

Jouis du bonheur. Horace : Quand Dieu t'envoie un bonheur, saisis-le avec reconnaissance (Epître I).

Dieu a fait l'un à l'opposite de l'autre : Job 2.10 ; Lamentations 3.38. Point de malheur qui ne soit compensé par quelque avantage. Comme aussi la vie la plus heureuse a ses peines. Tu as trop de lumière, voici la nuit ; assez des ténèbres, voici le jour. Tu déplores la mort, tu as aussi la vie ; tu te plains de la vie, voici la mort. Rien d'exclusif, en sorte que tu n'as pas le droit de te plaindre (Psaumes 51.6).

Afin que l'homme ne trouve rien [à redire] après lui : après Dieu, ou, comme d'autres l'entendent, après l'œuvre de Dieu (verset 13) ; qu'on ne puisse pas critiquer la manière dont il combine, pour le plus grand bien de l'homme, le malheur et le bonheur.

Plusieurs ne peuvent admettre que les mots après lui aient ici un sens différent de celui qu'ils ont partout ailleurs dans notre livre, où ils signifient toujours : après l'homme, après sa vie terrestre (3.22 ; 6.12 ; 10.14). Ils traduisent donc : Afin que l'homme ne trouve rien après lui. Dieu a fait le malheur comme le bonheur, pour que l'homme ignore son avenir ; c'est Dieu qui envoie bonheur et malheur, mais de telle sorte qu'il n'y a pas toujours correspondance entre le mal et le malheur, entre le bien et le bonheur.

D'autres encore : Dieu fait le malheur comme le bonheur en vue du moment où l'homme ne trouvera plus rien, c'est-à-dire devra sortir nu de cette vie. S'il n'y avait ici-bas que bonheur, l'homme ne serait jamais préparé à la mort.
